Dave Humphries first TSOM singer ?

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

I've read in a 6 full pages paper in French magazine D-Side that Dave Humphries was for some times (days, weeks ?), the first SOM singer early in 1980 (while Eldritch was still playing the drums, i.e. he found Doktor Avalanche). Anybody heard about this ?

Never heard about that.

John Langford is associated with the early Sisters (see Zig Zag mag from February 1984) but Dave Humphries... hm....

Given that the same article says, "Merciful Release was penniless, and it was a label called CNT which released the second sisters single, Body Electric, in April 1982. Another setback. The band went into hibernation, Andrew went into a depression and finally found a job as a DJ on BBC Radio 1 under the name Andy Kershaw," I'd be inclined to take it with a smidgen of the salty stuff. However, I did hear that Barry Humphries used to be the front man for Dead or Alive...

Did I mention that I've met Elvis at Karstadt when I went shopping yesterday? It must have been him.

Absolutely true, it seems that John was still playing the bass early 1982 : in a 2/27/82 review of the York concert (2/5), Melody Maker mentions him : "On bass, the stocky and stalwart JL seems to be in control of his new career - he used to drum for the Mekons"

There is some truth in this.... his name is mentioned in the credits of SGWBM (as Dave Humphrey), and Gary Marx has mentioned him in replys from the Ghost Dance page in relation to the gig in 81 at the Futurama festival in Stafford....the quote from Gary as follows...
''was it really '81? Yes we played the Futurama Festival in Stafford- as to whether we were a last minute addition I couldn't say. My memories are of playing the gig very early in the day and Andy walking onstage and yelling 'bring out your dead' to the few Bauhaus and Theatre of Hate fans scattered around the largely empty hall.
Now here's one for you trivia fans- the Sisters line up that day included a certain Dave Humphries on 2nd guitar (it was actually his last Sisters gig I think). Not a name I've seen mentioned too many times in the Sisters story''

Well there you go

Here's what Sisters wiki says, or rather says not :
Note: this list does not include short-lived members from 1980-1981
So Humphries may be one of those. He obviously left without a trace anyway.

Jon Langford subbed for Craig when he went off to do photography in South America or something like that, didn't he?

There was an old Von interview where he said something like (working from memory here): "the guy who was the singer decided he wasn't very good and asked me to have a go". No mention of names, but it seemed reasonable to work on the basis that was Gary Marx.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.
