London's CBGBs or Electric Circus

I have a question I hope you English folks, Londoners in particular, can help me answer for an article I have to write:

During the late '70s punk explosion, New York City had CBGBs, San Francisco had The Mab, Manchester had the Electric Circus, even Leeds, I gather, had the F-Club. What was the London equivalent? The club where the punk 'scene' coalesced and the bands played? I know there must be a simple, obvious answer, but I just don't know it. Any help will be very appreciated :notworthy: .

London's 100 club was pretty crucial in punk's early days I believe.

there was the 100 Club in Oxford Street that was the first place to let punk bands play with some sort of regularity.

other venues of note would be the original Marquee Club in Wardor Street and the Roxy (imortalised by Crass)

Depends what kind of shopping you're into I guess. Not my idea of fun for sure.

This place makes me think so much of Bladerunner's vision of LA it's scary. Image

In Glasgow (not that you're interested) it was The Mars Bar and The Bungalow out in Paisley, where Prince comes from. :innocent:

The Roundhouse played a part too. Especially the Ramones gig in '76.

Wow, thanks for all the replies. I couldn't get that link that someone posted to work. What does it lead to? And what does it say?

In any case, in summary:

NYC's CBGBs = London's 100 Club, approximately. Is that fair?

Thanks again guys

Didn't Prince live next to that much celebrated Scottish rapper McHammer?

In glorious Birmingham the "in" place for punks was Barbarellas. Not that there was much of a punk scene in Brum-mostly heavy metal fans round these parts I'm afraid.
