I work the bar for an indie live night, and it's a cultural anthropologist's dream. It seems to me that indie is the 'safe' alternative option, where regular, and chav, types can express an interest in vaguely abnormal music without too much hassle. Altogether too lacklustre and shallow.
Plus, the lads dress like Salvation Army closing-down sale cast-offs, and the girls like they've raided the box marked My Mum's Mistakes.
