Robert Calvert had serious mental problems, he wasn't on any psychedelics, he was on control drugs and many spells in 'institutions' to keep his mania at bay. Remember this was back in the 70s, a less enlightened time.

That still doesn't excuse making the band that brought us Silver Machine sound and look like Roxy Music on a bad night.

Silver Machine wasn't all Hawkwind were about, there are far better in thier canon.
