Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

OK technical boys, quick question. Is there any way I can play regular MP3s on an iPod? Miss Sinister has leant me hers for the weekend, but - to my twentieth century, neanderthal surprise - you can't play MP3s as they aren't supported by smug Apple's self-sufficiency, yes?

Is there any kind of sneaky trick or conversion program - not iTunes! - that I can use to get round this?

Ta!

MP3's work on my ipod, always have done. Work quite happily thorugh itunes and the ipod. And my previous ipod

Not really sure if this helps, other than confirms it can be done. Isn't there an option in itunes that allows you to choose mp3 or AAC format?

must be down to some strange uber-encoding on your mp3 files, tim :?

they usually play mp3s with no additional tweaking or pi$$ing about required...

Madness! I just dropped 'em into the necessary music folder on the IPOD removable device on My Computer, but they aren't appearing on the pod's navigation system. You can see all the albums when you look at it through Windows Explorer though...

What's this all about, eh?

Ah, it just needs them to be transferred across using it's own software, that's all.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

aye. its not like a lot of other p3 players - you need to import them through itunes

it renames the files to stuff like "566643.mp3" and then builds an xml "lookup table" using the mp3's ID3 tags

very longwinded way, but thats how it is. dragging and dropping through explorer wont work as it doesnt update the lookup table ;)

I recommend getting a cassette player. Works fine for me (I broke my mp3 player from overuse).

Or MiniDisc. I heard they're good..

I usually copy the files into the bottom of the iTunes music library folder and then double click on each one, which opens it throough iTunes, if that's any help.

I'd like to thank David "Sweaty" Matthews - all those hours sitting in your tiny classroom that reaked of your BO as you tried to drum the fundamentals of German grammar into my bored 17-year old brain finally paid off 8)

I just click import from whichever directory I've saved them to. Never fails Tim.
