From PA News:
"Joy Division's melancholic anthem Love Will Tear Us Apart has been named the
greatest single of all time in a new poll.
The song topped the list compiled by the NME to mark the 50th anniversary of
the singles chart.
It was released in January 1980, a month after the suicide of lead singer Ian
Curtis, and reached number 13 in the charts - the Manchester band's only top 20
hit.
Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit is in second place, followed by Anarchy In
The UK by the Sex Pistols.
The Rolling Stones make number four with Paint It Black, the first of three
entries for them in the top 100, while David Bowie is at number five with
Heroes."
...Blah, blah, blah...
Thus prompting the obvious question...and, yes, clearly it is nearly the end of the year, do you agree with these fantastic findings??? Or should the original version of Body Electric actually top the charts as SOME might argue???
Just a thought...

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" is a great song, no doubt but I still see no sense of all this top-bla-bla-bla-fabrication...
I'm absolutely agree with the journalist from "Sounds" (Oct. 13, 1984) who told about Sisters that they have released "series of feverishly good singles, climaxing with the Indie-Chart topper, "Temple Of Love" - a classic and nothing less".
But still... what is the sense of any kind of top-lists... I don't understand.

I think they deserve being hit No. 1
Although I think that they have tons of songs that are as good or even better than LWTUA, but people seem to know them only because of this track.....

I agree, but i s'pose - sadly - that it's the most commercial of their songs...
I like it in a way, but it's just so overplayed (in a you'd-never-hear-it-on-the-radio-these-days sort of way...)

This song deserves very much
But I don't think songs (even great ones) must have numbers.

A great song but number #1
Maybe for the year 1980 but not all time. Plus as mentioned they have sackloads of other ones I prefer over that one, unless we're talking about the fast version .

What he said what he said.
Take those 3 (4?) whatever minutes in total isolation, no history or context.
You'll struggle to find better and, much as I love the Sissies, don't bother looking there.

Greatest single of all time? Not likely.

ATMOSPHERE
Having said that, there are very few Joy Division songs that aren't so f**king genius it's scary to listen to them.

"Warsaw" or nothing.
Anyway, we all know The Grip Of Love was a better song.

heh heh heh! I'm not gonna be drawn into that controversy
I've learnt my lesson from the 'what happened to the old days' thread in the Sisters Chat

As much as Joy Division were a very influential band I don't think Atmosphere is a patch on AFTERHOURS.
As for 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', it is beautiful song.

Really, Afterhours?
Can you imagine if The Cure built their career on that instead?
