I mean, imagine your sitting at your computer, chating with a friensd about a problem she has when all of a sudden you hear something go Kla-Ting, Kla-Ting.. and it won`t stop.
For a second, you sit there and wonder what that noise is, it` s from your computer, that`s shure.
After a brief search you turn it of in panic, realizing it`s the harddisc making that noise..
When restarting your computer fails to recognize the disc..
Poll!

kick yourself for not having a backup schedule like you KNOW YOU SHOULD!
though you should really replace your hard drive before it dies... keep the old one as a backup as well.

It was new, young and innocent, bought in may.. The backup file is
on the disc that died.
By the way: I´m a bit surprised you didn´t vote for the first option...

Take the disc out and turn it into an A-bomb perhaps?

Have your mail stored on a RAID1 server in another room that is is backed up to a server in another part of town. Have a external drive to keep a copy of all your important documents, music, photos, etc. Have a script that runs once a day while you're at work to automate the back-up process.
Of course you still aren't protected against fire and theft but if either of those happen you'll probably have more important things to worry about.
I do feel for you though. I lost the drive in my linux box at work last week and hadn't backed up some of the scripts I'd written
I also have my Dad's failed hard drive on my desk which I need to take back to the supplier sometime

This poll sadly lacks an option involvings hammers, feet and the umpteenth floor of the nearest housing block..
(unless that's the third option, but I took that as being to kill the nearest living thing to you in anger..)

Fourth, to be preecise.
Third was the g+th style thingy. And with the fourth, no mention was made to restrict it to my neighbourhood.

I voted 1. I generally don't keep anything that can't be recreated on an unprotected HD anyway.
Then what I would do is take out the failed disk, open it up, and fiddle with the bits inside. Not in any hope of fixing it now, but purely for the fun of fiddling with electronic/mechanical stuff.

Take the old HD out, get a new drive and install windows on it, do all the updates etc...
Put the old HD in the freezer, making sure to wrap it in a towel so it doesn't come in direct contact with anything icy.
This can temporarily extend the life of a failing drive.
Disclaimer: Might not work in all cases so don't blame me if it f*cks the drive. To be used as a last resort.
When it's nice and cold attach it as a slave and copy the contents (important stuff first) to the new drive.

That´s good to know! ..for next time, that is. Right now, mine is vibratitng violently and making loud mechanical noises. I bet it is a broken bearing. How on earth this may happen to a perfectly balanced spinning disc installed in a static machine, I don´t know. but anyway.
Thanks a lot for the hints.
