Going to be staggering about later in the year....all i really know is what i read in "classic rock and see on the net....

So i suppose what id really like to know, is what do you folks think of the live music scene in england? Im not terribly familiar with the geography, but was thinking of london, camden, leeds (naturally)?

Is there any street press covering local gigs and whatnot?

Im not really into the whole retro glam crap thats going around...it seems you have that too? (towers of london??)

The music scene is fantastic. Depending on your tastes of course... There are loads of good bands playing really decent venues for reasonable (if any at all...) prices.
London is a bit overrated - every time I look for something to go to there it's very samey. Yorkshire (leeds, bradford, sheffield etc.) isn't looking too healthy at the moment either. The Midlands seems to be the place to be - Wolverhampton, Stourbridge, Derby and Nottingham all seem to have great gigs happening with alarming regularity.
But, like I said - depends what sort of stuff you wanna see...

I like JJJ for the newer more "alternative stuff" and their occasional heaviness but dislike it for its relentless "studenty" feel (although i did hear the Sisters version of 1969 on it once though, which was great). I like MMM for its hard rock but thats absolutely it.

Yeah, its a bit of an open ended question....Melbourne is considered to have a pretty big scene, but once youre in it, its actually really small.

i have to agree with Wild Bill here...i'm just back from Australia and while i agree with the p*ss poor radio Triple J and Triple M are the best of the bunch...

as for music...just to p*ss you off my guess is that Wolfmother (who are playing Reading and Leeds this weekend) are about to be the biggest thing since sliced bread in the British music wipes...expect gushing reviews of their sets in next weeks eNMEy

Just ignore any bands that you've seen promoted in big letters on the front of any magazines (especially the NME Kerrang ) and stick to the smaller venues.

If you hear a band played on Radio 1, don't go and see them

Yeah, i already despise NME, and gave up on Kerrang long ago!

I'd stay stick with London. But i would say that because thats my closest port of call.

I saw Depeche Mode and Thomas Dolby at O2 a few months back. I'm seeing New Model Army and Killing Joke and Apop at Lost Playground in a months time, there is this That Guitarist shadows thing going on, I recently went to a small goth rock all day event on the south coast (southhampton). And of course every band going near the UK on a tour puts in a London date (except rammstein on the last tour?!).

As for finding out about such things..stay clear of the press altogether. I keep a list of band websites in my favourates to check for tour dates, but also attend club nights and small gigs, or even just go shopping in camden and you will get your arse flyered off. I find out about a hellaver lot of gigs that way.
