Ah, the old self-created mythology. Interesting tidbit: one of the famous barmy postcards from Mexico in 1986 went thus:

So unless Tony James gave him the name well before joining the Sisters (which is admittedly possible) one must assume that Eldritch has fallen victim to a senior moment.

Eldritch knew Tony James before.. he (Eldritch) auditioned for Sigue Sigue Sputnik.
Though I think it's all s**t and he just wants to be called it.
