Living above the chemist

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

AE: "I was living above the chemist (as the Mekons put it)." [---]
"We hooked up with Craig Adams, probably because he lived above the chemist too."

Now my very lame and ignorant question, sorry... (As English is not my native language and I'm not very familiar with the Mekons  )

So - does 'living above the chemist' mean 'being on drugs'? (If you are afraid that Interpol - not the band Interpol - could do harm to mr AE, send your reply in private  )

Woo hoo, let's do the war above the chemist

What? I thought he had a little apartment above a chemist shop, going down every morning to collect his post from the small old man who ran the shop, that sort of thing.
I assumed Craig Adams lived in the bedsit opposite or something.

I thought that too...

...and when I grew older I thought it meant "living above the drug dealer". Also wrong.

But in all seriousness, "living above the chemist" isn't a term I'd ever heard until reading the cover notes of SGWBM. An invention of Eldritch's (or the Mekons)

so - was I right about the drugs reference?
(at first, back in 92, I thought also that AE had lived upstairs of a chemist shop but what does the 'as the Mekons put it' means this case?)

Yeah, you're right.

the Mekons, they're an arty punk band from Leeds (uni), featuring Jon Langford among others.

And you boys thought "You can stand all night
At a red light anywhere in town" is about working in a store for halogen light bulbs, right?

I know... to be true - I know only 2 songs of them (from They Shall Not Pass!) LP. Yes, my education is too much Sisters-orientated :innocent:

and on that same album there's a little ditty called Prince of Darkness. Could it be about a certain chap we know?! Wel, I guess so:

"He is the Prince of Darkness
He holds old friends in such high esteem
He sees a red town and wants it painted black
For the Catholic girls at Halloween

Well you know he said to me I've waited 7 years
And I am a very patient man
After all those things that we've gone and done
I still need someone to tell

His pleasures were a mistery to us all
You'd never see him out after dawn
In a German sea-port town
He takes coffee in the red-light
And now he is the Prince of Darkness."
