Heartland

We seem to have a good few fans onboard. Like the Sisters, they were a damn fine band with a wide-ranging influence who completely vanished off the radar.

Let's talk about them a bit.

Never got them , I tried, Mags and her Mates liked them , I file them next to Sonic Youth, Cranes and Loop.

never....well i say never but my sub concious says possibly once....listened to them

can't remember if it was good or bad...which is possibly a good thing as i'm on the fence!

Indeed they were a damn fine band. Kevin Shields was incredibly talented and underrated. Isn't Anything was an damn fine album and seemed to be a logical progression from JAMC's Psychocandy.

Quite liked Bilinda's whispy vocals and still liked 'em when Andy Weatherall remixed them. Never managed to see them live but have managed to get hold of a few of their live recordings, which still get played regularly

Kevin Shields has been doing film stuff (Lost In Translation soundtrack for one) and also remix work as well, for bands like Curve and he also remixed some tracks for that new Marie Antoinette film.

He was also adding a bit of extra quality to Primal Scream not so long ago. The guy is a hero of mine and I love the first album and parts of the second album. So yes Michael - I share your enthusiasm.

great band, totally underrated

So, if one were to want a decent introduction to MBV, what albums should one be looking for?

And they're both great. Loveless is a tad better IMO production-wise. It has this great big sound which Isn't anything quite doesn't have.

I tend to prefer 'Isn't Anything', just for the rawness of it. The 'Feed Me With Your Kiss'and 'You Made Me Realise' EP's were very good too.

Me too. It's more varied as well - every song is different, whereas Loveless (with the exception of Soon) is just variations on 2 or 3 styles.

Re: LPs, there was also "Ecstasy and Wine", a compilation of some earlier stuff, and "This is Your Bloody Valentine", a 7 track mini-LP which is almost the dreaded G word in terms of style.

A huge favourite of mine. There's a kind of secret history to the band. Initially they began as a Birthday Party/Cramps influenced band, all male vocals (Belinda didn't join til much later). No full length albums as such, but a couple of mini-LPs (which I've just seen someone else refer to in a later post).

The sound changes drastically as various members leave. The 2 albums mentioned above came out on Creation, but there were at least 2 EPs released before that in a similar style (compiled as the Ecstasy and Wine CD).

The originals of all the pre-Creation releases are rare as rocking horse s**t, but I have got bootlegged copies of everything. Happy to copy for anyone interested if they are happy to wait til my PC is fixed (should be early next week).

Memory is a bit shot today due to late night and too much Grolsch yesterday, but can post full list of what I have tomorrow if anyone out there is keen to know...!

I've certainly got the "You Made Me Realise" EP.

I may have other stuff knocking about as well. I seem to remember having "Ecstasy and Wine". I'll have a look tonight. Most of what I have will have been converted to MP3s as well.

If you need anything special PM me and I'll see if I've got it.

I saw them once or twice around the "You Made Me Realise" era (once supporting the JAMC and once as headliner).

Not bad from what I remember, but it's a bit of a blur...

yeah I would definately be interested in the early stuff

I have originals of This is Your Bloody Valentine and Ecstasy & Wine, the former being the "goth" phase with Dave Conway on vocals, the latter being just pre-Creation. I've had MP3s of everything else at one point in time or another, probly still knocking around somewhere.

While they're interesting to have, they were definitely a VERY different band in them days. Even Ecstasy & Wine has only one song ("Clair") that's remotely similar to what they would become.

wathching them play You Made Me Realise live was certainly an experience especially the 30 minute white noise holocaust in the middle. Fantastic band
