ITV Play - the scourge of tv

just been sent this as part of a daily "industry bulletin":
TV quiz shows may be classed as adverts:

The media regulator Ofcom has suggested that television quiz shows, such as ITV Play, might be classed as adverts in the future and subject to tighter regulations.

A consultation process into the matter began this week and if Ofcom decides to categorise such shows as adverts it would severely restrict the amount of airtime they could be given on general editorial channels.

‘Participation’ television quiz shows contain repeated invitations to call a premium rate telephone number and, because of this, could be argued to be commercial in nature and, therefore, adverts.

well thank f*ck for that. they're the scourge of television, and i find it appalling that a mainstream "general editorial" channel like ITV can get away with showing this type of cr*p all through the night

what happened to "inform, entertain & educate"? surely that must apply to the other terrestrial channels and not just BBC?

if ITV cannot find anything better to put on durng the wee small hours then they should go back to the days when they shut down at 2am :urff:

i saw on the news that ITV is viewed as a struggling channel at the moment... well, if those premium-rate "game" shows are the best they can find to schedule then i'm not surprised.

go ofcom! go!

I know that I'm not really in a position to say so, given where I work, but I'm increasingly of the opinion that premium rate phone lines should be banned outright.

The beautifull visions of tomorrow:
Watch the allnight gameshow *life* **all night** on your ***6 feet****plasma screen!*******
Wow.
And never mind it´s 400 Watt of power consumption, never mind the greenhouse, never mind the ozone layer.

 : These gameshows may actually save us! When everybody has one of those great plasma TV´s, you´ll need a good reason to turn it of. That may save a huge amount of energy, maybe even the athmosphere!

Everyone will be watching everyone else, and life will be a giant game where everyone is a celebrity, and "big brother" makes the rules. Christ.
