He'd had a very difficult first half of the 80s and decided to take an very long break.

There were no guitarists aside from session guitarists.

He pretty much didn't want to. He'd burnt himself out with touring, particularly in 84 and 85, and just wanted to take a break from it, simple enough really.

Apart from the lack of axe weilding types didnt Old Retch say that touring was bad for his health

Rather than tour, he felt it would be better for WEA to give him money he could spend while on holid...erm, sorry... "a lengthy period of Promotional Video's and Interviews" to discuss and promote the album across Europe, the USA and other foreign markets  ;D

I think it was because he was playing with all his new toys: keyboards, samplers etc.

...which don't prevent you from playing live. See Depeche Mode.
At the end of the day, I think he just didn't feel like going back on the road. :von:

if you really sing and make some melodies, at least, that counts
'live electronic gig' usually means that all sequenced stuff (keys, bassline, drums, FX) is played through midi or by someone
as in the Sisters' case
they got the Nurse

At least they're on stage. Even if it's more the drugs than the music they're after. :innocent:

He couldn’t really play live, could he? It’s not exactly as if he could go out with an acoustic guitar slung over his back and a harmonica, like Bob Dylan. And Patricia Morrison wasn’t of much use - all the smoke and lights would make it very hard for people to see her vogue.

He could have gotten a backup band, I guess, but I don’t think he was very bothered. He was probably as tired as f**k from all the amphetamine use and needed five years to catch up on all his sleep…
