My favourite dictator, the benevolent Saparmurat Niyazov, aka "Turkmenbashi", or leader of the Turkmen. He's been presiding over one of my favourite "stans" (second only to Iraquistan), for many years now, but popped his immortal clogs yesterday.

Full story here

In the Independence Square of the capital city of Ashkhabad, a
golden 95-metre-tall statue of Niyazov turns to follows the sun so
that a shadow never falls on the dictator's face.

The despot not only set up monuments and portraits to himself
throughout his realm, but in 2001 he revealed to his subjects his
very own bible - "the Ruhnama" - the knowledge of which is required
even for a driver's license.

He even had his own vodka...

What seditious talk. Surely it is the sun which, by divine preordination, follows its ancient course only to grace the Great Leader's face with the same light as he was to his people.
