What is racism?

If I say that I find Oriental women attractive and African women unattractive - is that a racist comment?

If I say that I believe that Oriental races are more intelligent than Western people, who in turn I believe are more intelligent than Black Africans - am I being racist? (I myself being a white Westerner).

Comments, opinions etc. What is hateful, what induces hate, what is racism. What can you say and what would you like to say but are not allowed to?

I'm confused.

People are too obsessed with political correctness, i'd like people to follow their own hearts and heads without a regard for what is socially/culturally acceptable. i think culture would most benefit from it.

Your confusion will end the moment you accept reality as you know it and forget about artifical rules imposed upon you.

Generally, i would also say that people who consider ideal world as such without "racism" etc, are the ones who are and cause the real problems. They are the ones who are perverting and distorting society.

So-called haters are much less dangerous than a "hate-free" world where every natural instinct and thought is stifled by political correctness.

i think it was one of the american presidents who said that people who are willing to sacrifice freedom for the sake of safety don't deserve freedom nor safety (not exact quote, mind numbed too much by an extremely stupid television program right now to try and remember). i tend to agree.

GGFH.

The fact that you are worried about this and makes you think, makes you more likeable than 50 percent of the world population ;)

First one is about your taste in women, that's not racist.

Second, well.... because of the political correctness today, it is allowed to say that a race is smarter than your own, but it is not allowed to say that a race is DUMBER than your own. So you can figure it out yourself.

For me, as long as you start a debate about the WHY of your statements, you are OK and maybe we can meet each other somewhere in the middle.

No, but it's nonsense nevertheless.

No, everyone has aesthetic preferences, if you're talking about outer appearance. However, if you then went on to judge all African women as dumb because you don't find them aesthetically pleasing to your eye, then it would be racism.
f I say that I believe that Oriental races are more intelligent than Western people, who in turn I believe are more intelligent than Black Africans - am I being racist? (I myself being a white Westerner).
The first clue that that is racism is that you're grouping people into "races" instead of "ethnicities". The second clue is that you're implying everyone is smarter in one ethnicity than in another simply because of the colour of their skin. So yes, there you are being racist.
what is... racism.
Racism is judging an entire group of people as inferior based on their ethnicity instead of judging each individual character based on his personality and then deciding whether you consider said individual "inferior" or "superior".
What can you say and what would you like to say but are not allowed to?
I hope people can say whatever the hell they like.

Racism is the belief that people are genetically determined according to their "race".

Same idea with different words. 8)

BTW, biologically speaking, there's no such thing as a human "race". Humanity is a species, with little genetic subdivisions.

for whom the BELL tolls.....

while most of this very controversial book discusses the fact that our societies are structured in such a way that they 'create' an intellectual elite, one chapter in particular really got the debate going;

In a general culture-free IQ test, the average african that grew up and still lives in africa scores 2 standard deviations below the average white north american that grew up and lives in north america; afro americans score in between. And of course there is overlap.

so, do africans score less on a general IQ test? on average, yes, they do.

does that mean that they're dumber than white north americans? No, it sure doesn't.

There is no such thing as a culture-free test, the measured IQ does NOT equal what we refer to as 'intelligence', performance on these tests can be 'trained', and there are a lot of different kinds of intelligence. Our well-known tests tend to measure mostly 'abstract thinking', 'cause that's what our society currently 'needs' from us (west, that is).
People that are good in abstract thinking generally have better education and end up having better paid jobs. Hence elite forming.
Plus, part if this 'intelligence' is inherited ('smarter' parents, 'smarter' kids).

conclusion: you have to be careful how you word such statements - but no, they're not necessarily racist.

IQ tests are very questionable at best anyway, not to say utter crap. :von:

I would say in respect of the Bell Curve that IQ test measure nothing other than the ability to be good at IQ tests.

The fact is, there are more genetic differences within the "races" than between them. There's more genetic diversity in the harvest mice in the average field than there is in the whole human species. We're all descended from the same few thousand people that made it through the population bottleneck ~70 to 75 thousand years ago. We're all related to each other.

I'm not sure whether you're being racist, but I think you would have a damned hard time showing that you were correct...

It may have been a joke ... but the Media Action Network for Asian Americans apparently didn't think it was very funny.

I guess there's a fine line between racism and "satirizing the racist thought process".

Perhaps racism is in the eye of the beholder.

I would generally say that Orientals, White Europeans and Black Africans are most definetely different races.
But say, for example that my statement is true and proved, would it then be considered racist to say it.

@Mark Fiend, you say it would be very hard to prove my statement, but it would also be damn difficult to disprove it.

As a final point I don't necessarily agree with my statements, they were made as a spark to start the warm fire of discussion. (But if there are any oriental women on Heartland feel free to contact me :innocent: )
