I think the issue is more the devaluing of good music by the artists themselves. Anything for dollar. Jim Morrison knew the score.

Come on, Buick, Light my Fire... Yeah, I was in stitches when I read Ray 'I'll sell my legacy for a few bucks more and rewrite Jim's words to fit my personal views' Manzarek trying to justify that sham, and Jim responding with threatening to demolish a Buick on stage every night if they went ahead with it. My man! :notworthy:

When singing said lyrics they had to put a piece of A4 in front of Berny with the amount they were being paid for the travesty, by way of incentive.

This is what happens when Factory spend all your money!!!

Aye, I heard that. (£200,000 was the figure mentioned )

But it almost backfired as it kept making Mr Sumner giggle...

IIRC, it was the Happy Mondays that spent all of Factory's money. On drugs, and recording a poorly-selling album in the Carribean.

'Twas indeed. The bands manager thought it would be a great idea to take Shaun seomwhere where smack was totally unavailable to record. They arrived and realised the Island was crawling with crack. :urff:

Nope.

The Hacienda swallowed up most of Factory's money (New Order were also joint shareholder's/investor's), as I understand it never managed to make a profit, only student night on a tuesday? managed to cover costs (student's bought and drank beer from the bar, ravers only drank water from either the sinks in the club toilets or brought their own), the burgeoning gangland scene caused a lot of trouble and this escalated security costs and applications for trading licenses. To which God's Cop (James Anderton) had been waging a campaign to close the club for years and insisted on police being on the premises (paid for by Factory).

The Factory classical label, never recouped the money invested in it.

New Order spent a lot of money recording "Technique" in Ibiza, and the sales from said album and the singles released were disappointing.

The Happy Mondays, although they failed to recoup the costs of recording "Yes Please!", had sold a lot of records worldwide which had kept Factory going.

The new Factory Offices had also been built on the supposedly continued success of both the Hacienda and their 2 top selling groups. But if they had no new product to offer, and Factory had no other bands to market, obviously you get a cashflow problem, and thus the creditors start asking for their money back.

FACT - Mick Hucknall's still a ginger, and yes Wilson should have signed The Smiths  :D

All well and good and accurate Si, but the Mondays spunking it all in the Windies is a far funnier story. :P And it'd have been money well spent (unless you're in New Order), as Yes Please! is a stonking album, sales or no. :notworthy:
