Vista Problem NUMBER 1! - Messenger
Posted: 22 Feb 2007, 22:35
by robertzombie
I downloaded Windows Live Messenger 8.1 from the site given by Vista and when I try to login I get an error message saying:
We've tried disabling the Windows Firewall but this has no effect. We've also made sure that Messenger is an "allowed program" in the Windows Firewall settings.
Anyone know how to fix the problem?

Only the obvious one: Don´t use Vista. At least not yet.

install linux!
or...
try this:
From
clicky
1. Start Messenger.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. Under Connection, click Advanced Settings.
4. Delete the entries under SOCKS.
5. Click OK, and then click OK again.
If you're still unable to sign in to Messenger
1. Check your firewall settings:
a. Go to the MSN Web Messenger website.
b. Click Start MSN Web Messenger, and then try to sign in.
If you can sign in to MSN Web Messenger, but Windows Live Messenger still can't access the Internet, Windows Live Messenger may be blocked by a firewall. You may need to add MSNmsgr.exe to your firewall's allow list. See your firewall's documentation or website for more information on how to add MSNmsgr.exe to your allow list.
2. A dial-up connection may be timing out. Wait a few minutes, and then try to sign in again.
3. If your computer is part of a corporate network, contact your network administrator to make sure that the network allows access to the Messenger service.
4. Make sure your antivirus or antispyware programs don't conflict with Messenger.

I've tried that stuff already
lazarus, thanks though
It's really weird, we use a wireless Internet thing and the other PC can connect to Messenger fine and I can even use Web Messenger on this PC!
Just a bit miffed as to why the actual program itself isn't working on here

Sometimes MSN just plain doesn't work.
Close MSN, go play a game or two, and try again in an hour or so.

For some reason I'm also missing
sndvol32/r (Windows Recording Mixer), I tried to open it in Audition but it gave the error message that it was missing.
Obviously this is quite an important little tool! Anyone know where I can download it? I've had a search around the web but found nothing

You're going to think I'm joking, but turning off the computer and then turning it back on again always fixes msn for me.

8.1 wont run with vista due to the live content in it, so im told.
Run an earlier version 8.0 and below, untill they fix it..
I have to right click on the messenger icon to then select run as administrator to get messenger to run, and thats on 7.5
i couldnt get 8.1 to work.
Also try this on 8.1
Run CMD as an administrator (type cmd in the serch pain in the start menu
then right click the icon in the and select Run as administrator). Then
type or paste in the the follwing:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

"NETSHi

Maybe that's the problem... Scotty shows the Service Pack 1, maybe upgrade to
Service Pack 2 first ??
