Guns N' Roses will headline South Africa's My Coke Festival in Johannesburg on April 27 and Cape Town on May 1.
The Cape Town gig is down the road from me, has anyone who's seen the recently reckon it's worth the entrance fee?

Not really, unless you want to spend a lot of dough on a guy who leaves his audience waiting for hours on end for no particular reason and see a show which half consists of solospots of the different musicians. Face it : this is NOT G'nR. If you want some real in your face rock with a self obsessed singer heading the band, go see Velvet Revolver. At least they rock...

Well, talk like this does make me like Axl Rose. But more by contrast than anything else.

Not what Rush said, though. But i doubt that's true. The media has been making him look back for decades, i suspect much for the same reason Eldritch is constantly being made look bad...because they're not corporate whores.

At any rate, i admire perfectionism, however misguided it may be, and inability pander.

About the democracy, you are probably right.
Unfortunately.

Thanks, I figured as much but it's always good to get confirmation.

I completely agree. (Saw them twice last summer) The english audience at the Download festival werent quite as patient as the Germans. They wrecked havoc in the camp area after the show. Most likely out of boredom.
Still it was an eminent experience to hear Welcome to the Jungle as opener and Sweet Child O' Mine again I must damit. 8)

Did you see them in their heyday, Jess? When the band was still a real band? I think that kind of prevented me from enjoying any of their songs last summer, no matter how well they were played. I'm not saying Axl has bad musicians in his supporting band; but once you've seen the original G'nR, you just don't settle for anything less...

Why does the name of the festival seem so appropriate here? Answers on the back of a mirror... ;D

.. so I take it you wouldnt go and waste your time on Sisters post-Marx then? :innocent: I'm really not that academic when it comes to music. Of course GnR were better at the end of the 80s but so were TSOM. No TSOM concert today can match my experience in 85. Still I go and watch TSOM for the sake of it even if Herr Eldritch has lost his voice some time ago and gathers nowadays talented beginners around him. Even if its merely for nostalgic reasons. Some songs are just so good no bad play can destroy them. The last time I saw GnR was after they became this huge lard-arsed stadion-Rock-act in 91, the first time somewhere around 88 or 89 pre-AfD. très cool by then. I still have a concert video from that time. must dig it up and revel in nostalgia. 8)

I see what you mean, though I think it differs from band to band. In the Sisters' case, it was always Von who was in charge. So no matter what, Von equals TSOM. Not so in Axl's/G'nR's case, because they started out as a real band and certain band members (ie. Slash and Duff) had everything to do with how they used to sound. They also have a bigger album catalog with these members, making it harder for people to get into a G'nR with no one left but Axl (and Dizzy, but he was added to the line up later on and never credited as a band member in the past). What with one thing or another, I didn't like what I heard last Summer. But that could just be me, of course. I'm all for giving a band with a new member (or several) a chance, but often enough it turns out that it's not necessarily beneficial to the band (Iron Maiden without Bruce, anyone?). And sometimes it is. In G'nR's case, it isn't and the non- event that is the release of Chinese Democracy - soon to become an urban legend, were it not for the leaked mp3's - isn't really helping Axl's case...

Ooh dear, those early 90s gigs :urff: Not even Slash could save 2 plodding, bloated performances (maine rd 92 and Milton Keynes 93). They were far far better at the Leeds Festival in 2002, new band or otherwise. Don't think I've ever seen quite so many people bouncing like loons as they did when the band came on (eventually  ) with Welcome To The Jungle. :notworthy:

I first saw them at Donington 87/88? when they opened the show (and a few people unfortunately died down at the front :urff: ) and they rocked my world (to use a crappy cliche) and then I saw them at Wembley a few years later and they were slowly disappearing up their own arses! (Still excellent though!)

Wouldn't go and see them now to be honest. It just wouldn't be as good.

I still have a weakness for them... But I must admit - Velvet Revolver is much much better!

Have I mentioned before just how much I always did, always do and always will hate Guns and f**king roses.Second rate glam metal crap with a second rate Astbury impersonator on,I was going to say vocals but Axl Rose's horrendous screech can hardly be described as such..
In the late 80's/early 90's we had Goth,Madchester, shoegaze,Grunge and industrial. Why the f**k was anyone interested in Guns and roses' naff,old-hat,sub Spinal tap rubbish?
