Laptop Issues

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Probably nothing to worry about, but still wondered.

As of yesterday night I noticed my HDD was making some funny noises, so I thought to run Disk Utility and this is what I got:
Disk Utility wrote:Verifying volume “Macintosh HD
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
%)
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
Still, the repair button (which is under the verify button), isn't clickable. Is this anything serious or can I just live on without any worries this way :?:

And something else I wondered about: Which is the best thing I can do to get the most out of my battery? At the moment I always wait for it to be as empty as it can be before I plug it in again, make sure it's filled to the very rim, and only unplug it when I need it. Is this the ideal scenario, or should I operate it differently :?:

Did you boot up from the Install DVD Zed or run Disk Utility from the HD?

Just from the Applications folder, should I give it a try from the Install DVD then? (and how to if so :innocent:)

It won't make me loose any data, I hope?

Yep, try the DVD, insert, boot up with the 'c' key on the kybd held down, click install. When it gets to the first splash screen, go to the menu bar and run Disk Utility from there. I haven't heard about any data loss running DU.

Return of the Mac! :D

It is a good idea to run 'Verify Permissions' once a month or after heavy abuse. ;D
Another thing you might want to d/l and run is Janitor* or Onyx* depending on versions available for your X set up, being a Unix based OS it needs to do what is known as 'house cleaning' and this is set to run at times when it expects the Mac to be on but not being used ie. the wee small hours of Saturday or Sunday. If you don'y want to leave your Mac running night and day at weekends, those utilities will run the scripts as and when you choose.

sincerely
Jimmy Mac

After a couple days of absence, the noise seems to have returned today  I might be a bit overly cautious when it comes to hard disks, I've heard too many stories about crashes

This is exactly the sound mine makes. To worry or not to worry?

Onyx and MacJanitor are ace by the way. Thanks James :D :notworthy:

I'd get all your important files off that HD (music, porn, account and bank details etc.) then take it back to the AppleStore, it's still under warrenty.

:D

Still, just found a satisfactory explanation:
Appledefects.com wrote:The sound is thought to be the "head" on the hard drive returning to the "parked" position.
That doesn't necessarily sound like a bad thing, it seems? I should learn to check google before panicking

I use the MacUser or MacFormat magazine forums for help of that ilk.

Google is our friend, be sure and tell Claire that!

It is when you have a female harddrive.
