NEW FAST AUTOMATIC DAFFODILS

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

All this talk of old bands and the fact that Stockholm was just on 6 Music reminded me of them. Had the 'Body Exit Mind' album years ago but has gone missing. Anybody else a fan back in the day? It's a stonking album.

I vaguely remember some stuff by the New FADS but I wouldn't say I was ever really a fan. 8)

I didn't even know they went all baggy. As I say I've only heard the one album and it was cracking. Some slight Joy Division moments on it I guess. :urff:

I saw the news FADS live in Leeds on a few occasions. Fishes eyes was a bit ropey, but 'BIG' (especially the early Peel session version) was a bona fida Indie/Madchester classic. :D
Then again, I've always been an indie kid, that just happens to love various early /mid 80's Leeds bands.

Ah, that well trodden path amongst Manc bands - start off atmospheric (pun intended), moody, and probably miserable, then go all 'baggy'.

cf. The Bee Gees, Take That, Simply Red.

At least I think they're the right examples.

Define "baggy," please..? I remember seeing that term used to describe bands years ago in NME (around '90 or so), along with stuff like "kiddie" and "anorak" (Huh? 'Splain, pwease.). I can't keep up with you Brits and your musical pigeonholes, hahaha! :P

I think it's somewhere between shoegazing "indie" rock and E-tripping rave. But I could be wrong. And how those two would go together anyway makes no sense to me.

Baggy? They definitely had a Manchester sound, but they always reminded me of The Wedding Present -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baggy
Baggy was a British dance-oriented music genre popular in the early 1990s.

The scene was extremely influenced by Madchester, although the scene was not geographically confined to Manchester. Many Madchester bands could also be described as Baggy, and vice versa. Baggy was characterised by psychedelia- and acid house-influenced guitar music, often with a funky drummer beat, similar to the work of the Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses. The scene was named after the loose-fitting clothing worn by the bands and fans.

Some bands, such as the The Mock Turtles and The Soup Dragons, reinvented their sound and image to fit in with the new scene. This led some critics to accuse baggy bands of bandwagon-jumping and derivative songwriting. There was also a crossover between dance and indie, and vice versa.

Bands in the indie-dance era of pop music can be divided into two camps; the acts who could be described as baggy (usually the 'Madchester' acts and a few others such as Flowered Up from London) — and those who can be described as indie-dance (i.e. Jesus Jones, who were more techno inspired).

Baggy and Madchester acts

The Candyskins
The Charlatans
The Farm
Flowered Up
Happy Mondays
Inspiral Carpets
The Mock Turtles
My Jealous God
New Fast Automatic Daffodils
Northside
Ocean Colour Scene
The Real People
The Soup Dragons
The Stone Roses
World of Twist
