The Coven (review) with DJ Cython - Saturday 9th June

If there’s one thing that really pisses me off, it’s a complete lack of common sense. Take the busiest night of pretty much the whole population of England. Cover the land in crap metal train tracks to provide transport to here, there and everywhere, then reduce the service severely on that particular day, so commuters’ can actually travel anywhere! Then take the next best thing and travel by road, only to find that the bastards have closed the motorway, to perform (in my opinion) non-essential road works.

So, due to these facts, my opening set, to which was solely written for my friends venturing up from London, ends up being played to our very sparse audience of, I’m glad to say, many new younger willing sinners, but which I think is a tad over their heads due to a majority of the songs being written before they were born!

For the first half hour I’m basically on my own, with CovenAlex arriving late, only to leave again to get his money for the night. Obvious, this is the trend of the night, with our poor guest DJ Cython also being stuck on the motorway and not arriving until nearly 11.30pm. Luckily, Sara and Val arrive approx 11pm and manage to reach Cython via mobile, as the phone network is at it’s slowest with voicemails taking an hour to come through. Sara and I end up running out of the club to find Cython and crew trying to navigate the stupid one way system around the club.

The night finally gets underway, and although it never feels like it’s busy with many people in the courtyard due to the heat, the final figures indicate a full night. As per usual, it’s very hot downstairs, and Loopy & I had purchased small ice lollys as a treat for later in the night. Unfortunately, these had all pretty much defrosted buy the time we decide to give them out. But don’t worry; we’ll give then out next month!

So, although I seem to be running around like a headless chicken most of the night, it’s still a great night and encouraging to see so many people supporting The Coven.

Thanks to everybody that made the effort, and to our guest DJ Cython, who still managed to get in a full hour of some classic tunes despite the pathetic transport system, and for CovenAlex for filling in the gaps, and to Greg for the totally brilliant new backdrop.

We’ll be back next month on Saturday 14th July for our mega brilliant fifth anniversary night with Screaming Banshee Aircrew. Early figures indicate that this night is going to sell out very quickly, so ensure you arrive early to get your place in what is likely to be one of The Coven’s best nights ever.

Remember that when we return, the whole of the venue including the outside courtyard will be non-smoking, and anybody caught lighting up will fined £50, so do yourself a favour and leave your ciggies behind.
