Appears unfortunate but having friends in Defra I can see both sides...

If there was an outbreak of avian flu however my partner and I already have a plan of how to remove our parrot before there are orders for destruction. Our parrot has never had contact with other birds and presents no danger to the general public ;)

They were going on about preserving the sanctity of life etc.
What would they really prefer here?
1 cow put down (humanely by all accounts)
or.....
A team of government "slaughterers" trampling all over the place, whacking the whole lot with a bolt gun or whatever, as if on a production line & slinging them into a pit to be burnt en masse?
