Smoking Stones avoid stage fine
The Rolling Stones flouted England's new smoking ban when two band members lit up on stage at London's O2 arena.
But the venue will not be fined after Greenwich Council said it was "satisfied" the incident was a one-off.
Guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood both smoked cigarettes during the first of the band's three gigs at the former Millennium Dome.
The maximum fine for a venue that allows people to break the ban, which came into force on 1 July, is £2,500.
A spokeswoman for the O2 said: "A band member appeared to have a cigarette, however it was extinguished almost faster than the message to put it out got to stage.

2. Andrew Eldritch will smoke on stage. Tour management is advised to make accomodations for whatever fines may be levied by the venue or the local authorities, because Andrew will plead poverty and refuse to pay it.

Of course not, fer feck's sake!
They'd sooner fill their lungs with other toxic waste like smelly armpits and beerfarts than the smoke from ONE guy puffing away on a stage 10 feet high and 10 yards away...
A non-smoking crowd, ok, I see a point, but the bands...

Odd one was, I saw Nick Cave shortly after the ban came in here, and not only did he smoke on stage, but he also made a comment to the effect that he was allowed to
I'm sure there must be a clause in our regulations relating to stage/performance/theatre/etc.

I remember reading somewhere that there was an exemption for actors smoking on stage in England (but not Scotland or Wales).
If Von can claim that he's an actor and smoking is integral to his role, then he may just manage.
Realistically, though, when he's standing amongst all the dry-ice and smoke machines, who the hell is going to know if he's smoking...

The last time TSOM played New York we were in the first 5 rows, comfortably wreathed in dry ice and smoked without being hassled because no-one could see. As we were waiting to leave, some rent-a-cop came over and told me to put my cigarette out. I pointed at the stage and asked why I should, given that this bald guy had been smoking for the last hour or so, and no-one has asked him to put it out. Response: "You're not allowed to smoke in here, can't you read the signs?"
Guess it's another case of one law for the rich and famous and one law for the rest of us...

On topic: it reminds me of a story about Whitney Houston that I read in a tabloid at a dentist's waiting room a few years ago. Apparently, she got caught smoking in the toilet on a plane, and the stewardess asked her to pay a fine of - say (can't remember) - 100 EUR, to which Whitney drew a 1000 out of her purse and told her she intended to smoke 9 more.
Or was it Naomi Campbell?

could we all put in a group action and sue Eldo for all our heart and lung ailments on the grounds of his 40 Marlboro-red-top-a-gig habit and all that dry ice?
Maybe if we did he'd HAVE to sign a record contract to raise the money and we'd finally get the new album!

One of them is.
Another has been for quite a while as well, but they reanimated the corpse and he seems to work pretty fine.
A third was made into leather sofas some time in the late 80s.

As an ex smoker, I can see the point of banning smoking in certain pubs and clubs, as eventually breweries will get sued by persons who are ex staff members with terminal illnesses who state that this is due to secondary inhalation. But to bar a single person up on a stage that is half a mile wide, that just smacks of Government stupidity. You are probably more likely to get ill due to exhaust fumes from cars in cities. They'll probably ban that next.
