Ripping Songs from MySpace

Useful little tool this :

http://www.mouseindustries.com/gopher/

If you go to a MySpace page, on the address bar there is usually an FriendID number. If there is just the name of the page (www.myspace.com/NAME) then click on the photos and you should be able to see the FriendID in the address bar then.

Dead easy little program to use. You can use as multiple copies of it at one time although, if you do that I suggest once you press play to start the download, you press pause straight afterwards (the song keeps downloading in the meantime) otherwise you can end up with a load of songs all playing at the same time.

The MP3s are encoded in MPEG2 layer 3 at 96kbits which although isn't the greatest quality, they are quite listenable to.

Who the hell uses a Mac?!

Well, for those unfortunate souls, you could always have a read of THIS ARTICLE and use the plugin things they're talking about.

Personally I wouldn't normally touch anything below 160kbps with a bargepole, and the fact that it came from myspazz doesn't make it very attractive either

Seriously, why not use something like Total Recorder? Basically it will record ANY sound you can hear through your speakers, at any bitrate and format you like.

If you use Firefox (and I know some of you do) then you ust grab yourself the Firebug extension.

It's meant for testing or debugging web pages but it also tracks what a page is doing.

You can choose a MySpace tune and see the link to the "standard" version appear as it builds the stream. Copy this path and alter the bit that says "std_" to "full_" and get the better version for downloading - even if the site wasn't meant to let you. No 96k rubbish here!

When I plug the resulting link in, I get a "401: Unauthorized" error - how are you working around this, or am I doing something wrong?

Ah, the MPEG2 Layer 3 96kb has better sound than a normal MP3 at 96kb (as this is MEG1 Layer 3). I don't really understand the whole mechanics behind it though. Anyway, I'm gonna have a look at that Firefox extension...

There isn't any point as the stream you get from the site is still the same MPEG2. If you recode it in a higher bitrate, it doesn't improve the sound quality.

Just tried this. Got the same result as Sinny : 401 Forbidden. That's a bugger.
