Favourite Cult Movie(s) ... ?

I'm sticking my neck out here (again), but having this time sought approval from the very highest authority (you know who you are?!):~

Favourite/recommended Cult Movie(s)? - My first suggestion would be ... 'O Lucky Man', others might be:~ 'Ruling Class', 'The Servant', 'Les Valseuses', 'The Night Porter', 'Dr. Strangelove', 'Kind Hearts and Coronets', 'The Magic Christian' (not what you'd think if you don't know it!), and the more obvious(?!): 'Ronin', 'Light Sleeper', 'Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia', 'Clockwork Orange', 'The Grifters', 'Carnival of Souls', 'Drugstore Cowboy', 'Quest for Fire', 'Being There', 'Leon', 'Brighton Rock', etc etc ... oh, and of course 'Withnail and I' - Perhaps this should be an all time No.1? Loads of others too that I have forgotten for now, but I'm hoping you will remind me? Are 'Pulp Fiction', 'Reservoir Dogs, 'Bad Lieutenant' & 'Natural Born Killers' to be included? I'll leave it up to you ...

Too many Film Noirs to mention here and now - I await a more superior knowledge here ...

Like many of you I'm sure, I love this stuff and am always on the search for new and obscure stuff ...

Phew, have I redeemed myself a little, eh?

What do you exactly call a "cult" movie ?
I'm pretty sure "Night of the living dead" and "This is Spinal Tap" are, but how about Scorcese, for instance ? How about Woody Allen ? The Godfather ? Etc.

Just a few favorites, off the top of my head (I'll be back to add more, as I think of 'em, of course ;)):

Harold and Maude

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Dawn of the Dead

Blade Runner

Escape From New York

Barbarella

Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster (Gojira tai Hedorâ) - dunno if this really counts as a "cult" film, but it's my fave Godzilla movie ever!

The Warriors

The Hunger

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension

The Man Who Fell to Earth

Akira

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

I had a think about that & was gonna say "Dreamtime Live at The Lyceum". It was the only one they made wasn't it? :innocent:

But reading the post, I am guessing it's referring to non-mainsteam Hollywood dross (but then not necessarily "straight to video") movies.
Or?...

That's just a bad movie set up to look like a cult movie but completely failing at that.

Other than that, it's obviously hard to define what exactly a cult movie is, probably most of them are either movies that have failed at the box office and thus ended up being forgotten, in their case not rightly so (though some do obviously belong there), or art house movies whose purpose has never been to be widely loved but of which everybody knows the names without too many having seen them.

Probably others would say it's mostly forgettable artwank no-one bothers to watch

What would be my cult? (at random and on top of my mind) Most Lynch material, Spinal Tap might be a good one to get in the list too, Dr. Strangelove, anything by Russ Meyers, THX1138, Koyaanisqatsi, 2001, Videodrome, Superfly, C'est arrivé pres de chez vous and so forth and so on.

OK, whatever, for me that- "cult- still doesn't explain everything.
but this is my problem

I don't know whether you'd call it cult...
But I have a deep appreciation and respect for "Cube"(1997).
It's worth watching, even if you don't like seeing people getting cut into tiny bits by a wire frame...

If you define a cult movie (also applies to cult bands) as a - relatively - unsuccessful, yet very influential, film, how on earth can the immensely successful Godfather be called "cult".
I guess the perfect cult band would be The Velvet Underground (not talking solo Lou Reed here), or maybe The Stooges (again, no solo Iggy Pop).
Since we're all more or less alternative people, we'll probably end up just making lists of our favourite movies anyway. :innocent:
Just for the record : "Plan nine from outer space" isn't a cult masterpiece. It's a load of crap. Discuss as much as you want. :P
I had more fun watching "Return of the killer tomatoes".
And Russ Meyer rules. ;D

Yeah, but it's so bad it has to be seen to be believed.
Another one in that "ilk" is Queen of Outer Space

Brilliantly bad!

Watch Freaks here - it's a very dark 1932 film that was banned the world over & is still quite hard to watch for some people now.
