Sorry but there's something else I need to rant about. It's the goddam pig ignorance for the english language and individual thought that's sweeping the country/western world. An example is people writing "there" when it should be "they're". So they just spell as it sounds. What the hell happened to schools? Actually, it's probably just laziness and mobile phones.

The next literal confusion will be people writing "bye" when they mean "buy".

This country is becoming so dumbed down, apathetic, lazy, selfish and uncaring it makes me ashamed. It's not everyone obviously, but the increasing majority and the government.

Deep breaths now. Control, Tom. Control.....

It is all about the development of the English language init? - A LIVING language like it or not ... I'm with you though, that it often offends me now too, but I suspect that this is a sign of getting old? (I do like my slippers - Whoops!) I was taught that English was an amalgamation of many languages, vocabulary and grammar ... Sadly the software for spell checkers that we all tend to rely on these days is usually American and this is something I resent - They encourage laziness too surely? Perhaps we should all go back to writing at desks with quills and ink on parchment?

I disagree. I think the advent of email, IM, and text messaging, coupled with lax and largely-meaningless educational standards and an overall lazy (and increasingly-ignorant) populace is hastening the decline of the language. I remember the stuff that elicited a slew of red correction marks on my 9th- and 10th-grade English papers, and laugh - "One sentence is not a paragraph!" - and the like. If she's still around, my favorite high school teacher must be tearing her hair out, these days...

My Grammar School was 16th century and our classrooms in the old building felt like this - So I carved the lyrics to Lou Reed's 'Heroin' into a desk in 'Big School'. I find your youthful experiences to be utterly unfathomable, sir. When I was that age, I was a virtually-friendless shut-in (well, almost!), who did endless amounts of homework, studied constantly, read copious quantities of British/American literature, and watched MTV every chance that I got (which, truthfully, wasn't that often, as I have 2 younger brothers and my family owned a grand total of 1 TV set at the time).

*Hexe runs for cover as her English is quite bad...although she can be justified as not being English but a "mainlander from Southern Europe -not that southern but still.. - and not having learned English at school (because she studied French, which she quickly forgot) but she learned it in five years in Jolly Scotland *

Ok, sillyness aside, I do get annoyed when I see some mispelling from people whose English is their first language...I'm like:"why do I get it right and I have nothing to do with it and you, who've been talking it since you were in your mum's womb basically, cannot?"

Yes I think it comes down to the overall laziness of the country and the poor example set by the government - who should all be set on fire.

Well, if that's any comfort, this is not just happening in English. I get text messages sometimes that do make me wonder whether the people writing them have ever been to school at all. Can't give you examples as they're all in German, and German is a bitch of a language, but come on! One can learn how to spell words properly! A former boyfriend of mine was unable to distinguish between B and P, D and T, it all sounded the same to him in Swiss German. I don't think it's the teachers' fault actually, I rather think it's the lack of feeling for a language...

Same happens in Italy, especially with the younger generations.
Their ignorance is appalling but what is worse is they don't give a damn about even trying to get better.
For instance: I'm on my way of getting a second degree so I enrolled to Uni again, this means that I'm between eight to five years older than the rest of the students there. As I made friends with some girls and boys in my course, it happens, sometimes that we exchange notes taken during lessons to check if things are right or if any of us is missing bits and bobs; well, in some of my "colleagues" papers there are so many mistakes that is almost impossible to understand what they meant.

i don't allow my kids to use 'like' or 'well' as in 'i was like walking own the road' or 'it was well good' in class, i make them say it again.
no, even at the age i teach, there's no real desire to do anything properly. or, sometimes, at all...

Me fail English? That's unpossible!
