Think the worst thing that can possibly happen to a computer just happened to mine. Bumped into my glass, threw it all over the keyboard

Turned it upside down, removed the battery, power cord, ... Anything else I should do other than wait for a couple of days before turning it on again?

Should really learn to back-up, all my school work, music, emails, it's all in there and no way I can reach it now

You might be lucky - the liquid might just have bolloxed the guts of it without taking the hard drive with it. Before you see whether you can get it up and running again, I would take it to someone who knows what they're doing to pull the HD and back it up onto something (like another HD). Then put the HD back and you can mess around to get it going again without worrying about losing your data permanently.

I am not happy about this Zed

Very shortly after getting my laptop, it had a full glass of water emptied into it.

I thought I was fucked, but left it to dry out overnight, tried turning it back on, it went a bit mental, made some funny beeping noises ... but after a couple of hours it just booted itself up and carried on like nothing had happened.

Hope you have the same luck...

I do believe we are talking about an Apple, a black one in Zed's case and not some "common or garden" piece of metal with wires hanging out of it Steven

Was it water or something else? If it was beer, juice or any soft drink chances are that the keys are gonna dry out sticky, so a bit of dismantling and soaking non-electronic parts in warm soapy water might be in order.

Let's hope for it I'd need to have a look for someone with a Mac in town though, as I guess peecees can't read the data from it?

That's the kind of thing I wanted to hear

Extra trouble here: My glass had bitter lemon in it, so both sugary as well as acidy, quite sure those are two things the inside of a computer does not like

About the hairdryer, wouldn't that make it too static?

Zeno, if the case of your Mactop offers some opening at a side, try to place it upright with the opening pointing dowm near a radioator and wait one or two days. Of course you have to make sure it can't fall over!
It should be open to allow as much of airflow as possible.
If I am not mistaken the thingies have short circuiting protection. So it should be okay soon.

Other than CD slot no side opening, there is one at the back for the airflow though (but cannot let it stand up like that). It's currently next to a radiator in a place with good airflow, so crossing fingers

isn't Jumlaut well known for having things fall apart?

...my mum put a couple of layers of clingfilm over the keyboard and taped it down at the sides. This prevented any amount of fizzy orange pop and tea from causing expensive accidents. While it might well ruin the look of your fancy-schmanzy fruity laptop, it might save any number of future fluid-related catastrophes.

Exactly. He needs $40-per-roll iFilm which only works on Apple products, but constantly needs firmware updates.

Picky flippin' picky - ok, here's the clingfilm solution for shiny black MACtops:

1. Take two layers of the most expensive clingfilm you can find - try a 24-hour garage for the best prices.

2. Place the layers one on top of the other.

3. Measure the size of the space you want to cover.

4. Cut the clingfilm to be 2" or 5cm larger than that area.

5. Spray the clingfilm with metallic black auto-paint (do this before you stick it down)

6. Stick the clingfilm onto the keyboard using really really expensive electrical tape.

7. Using Tip-Ex or a fine silver marker, write the letters on the clingfilm - extra points given if you use Caslon Antique. Alternatively, don't write the letters on so you have a sleek black laptop and can impress people with your touch-typing skillz.

I'm still using one of these - the best thing about it is that if you spill bitter lemon over the keyboard it still functions.

we have these things called "Appleâ„¢s" these days, c'mon ye know ye just love and want it by the colours (sorry) colors used in the logo -
