Dodgy Mac Brigade

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Yes.

We are currently having a fight with Apple about their browser. They want us to re-engineer our web application so it will run on Safari. We tell them that statistically Safari users make up only 5% of brower usage, compared to IE (75%) and FireFox (17%). We are a PC house, and the vast majority of our clients are PC users. If they were willing to help us test the app on their browser then we'd consider it. But no. "We don't want to help you improve your product, we just want you to make it run on our browser." Tossers.

worked on OS9 and 7 all the way back to 4, believe it or not, and compared to what else was on offer at the time, it has allas been my weapon of choice, The Mum was gifted an old Mac iBook recently which I set up for her, going back to OS9 and 64k of RAM is a nightmare! so I can understand your displeasure Mr. Emok - why don't ye shove it up yer erse instead? ;D

Having been a Windows PC guy for many, many years, I must confess I don't know why it took me so long to switch. I couldn't live without my Macbook Pro, and even my luddite wife has completely fallen for her Macbook. Her old laptop rarely got used, she actually likes using the Macbook.

To be fair, by comparison, Windows 98 was like giving yourself a vasectomy.

Macs are OK, if you want the exact specification Apple offers; if you want something different (like a mid-range model with separate monitor and base unit, you're out of luck.)

The main reason I'm still using them is because Logic is Mac-only, and while I could switch to another sequencer, I don't know when I would ever have time to learn to use it properly, and I've also come to depend on all those lovely software instruments.

As Jeremiah says, Macs are fine if you want the exact specification (both hardware and software) that Apple offers. And if you can afford Apple's ridiculous mark-up on the price that comes from an Apple-controlled monopoly on hardware manufacture. If all that's OK with you then that's fine.

Let's not even mention Windows PCs.

If you prefer to have control over your hardware and software (and don't want to spend a fortune) then some sort of Linux machine is what you want.

Linux is a Unix variant. Both Linux and Unix are free software. Mac OSX is based on Unix code, but Apple charges you a fortune for it and tells you what hardware you are "permitted" to buy to run it on. I don't like being told what to do by computer manufacturers. I'm the customer, and I'll do what I want.

on point #1: aren't Mini Macs mid range, reasonably priced and cheap/easy to upgrade? the only Macs that come with monitors are the laptops and iMacs

on point#2: yes Apple are expensive - in this country. why are they cheaper in the Evil Empire?

on point#3: I used a Sun Sparc 1 at work for a while and I loved it's speed and look, but for a computer bozo like me it was hell to operate as it came, nevermind fiddle with the OS

on point #4: I agree - Apple can be extremely arrogant, sound like a combo that had some hits in the 80s folks? ;D

there is no point #5: so here's my Jerry Springer sign off - I'll never be persuaded to switch.. now, why don't you all just go and get bent!

I love my mac and will be saddened when I'll have to switch back to that other system for professional reasons in a couple of months. Luckily, I'll still have my own toys of choice for my spare time ;D

Are Mac Minis mid-range? Maybe a mid-range price but rather lacking in features. Admittedly, if you want a Windows machine of a similar size, you would probably end up paying even more for something that was no better.

The size itself puts major limitations on what can actually be done with it though, and as far as upgrading goes, unless the latest model is significantly different to the earlier ones, you practically need a saw to open them up (voiding the warranty in the process.)

What I was thinking of as mid-range was something with the expandability of PCI-express etc slots, space for multiple internal hard disks, more than 2 RAM slots, the ability to use a monitor of my choice, without necessarily wanting either the performance or the price of an 8-core Xeon. Disappointingly, Apple do not offer such a machine.

My G5 is doing just fine at the moment *fingers crossed* so hopefully I won't need to think too much about it just yet.

You're the tosser if you make a "web application" that doesn't work on all reasonably featured browsers.

It's strictly a business decision - Safari isn't used enough in commerce to make it an economical proposition to re-engineer the app so it can run smoothly on it.
