Can't confirm this isn't a hoax, but it seems to be moving very quicky


A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive ever! This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine has yet ! been developed. This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are stored.

This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title "A Card for You".

As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened, the computer freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York, according to news broadcast by CNN. This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft itself.

So don't open any mails wi! th subject: "A Virtual Card for You."

As soon as you get the mail, delete it!! Even if you know the sender!!!

If you receive an e-mail entitled "Badtimes," delete it
immediately. Do not open it. Apparently this one is pretty
nasty.

It will not only erase everything on your hard drive, but it will
also delete anything on disks within 20 feet of your computer.

It demagnetizes the stripes on ALL of your credit cards.

It reprograms your ATM access code, screws up the tracking on
your VCR and uses subspace field harmonics to scratch any CD's
you attempt to play.

It will re-calibrate your refrigerator's coolness settings so all
your ice cream melts and your milk curdles.

It will program your phone AutoDial to call only your
mother-in-law's number.

This virus will mix antifreeze into your fish tank.

It will drink all your beer.

It will leave dirty socks on the coffee table when you are
expecting company.

Its radioactive emissions will cause your toe jam and bellybutton
fuzz to migrate behind your ears.

It will replace your shampoo with Nair and your Nair with
Rogaine, all while dating your current boy/girlfriend behind your
back and billing their hotel rendezvous to your Visa card.

It will cause you to run with scissors and throw things in a way
that is only fun until someone loses an eye.

It will give you Dutch Elm Disease and Tinea.

It will rewrite your backup files, changing all your active verbs
to passive tense and incorporating undetectable misspellings
which grossly change the interpretations of key sentences.

If the "Badtimes" message is opened in a Windows95 environment,
it will leave the toilet seat up and leave your hair dryer
plugged in dangerously close to a full bathtub.

It will not only remove the forbidden tags from your mattresses
and pillows, but it will also refill your skim milk with whole
milk.

It will replace all your luncheon meat with Spam.

It will molecularly rearange your cologne or perfume, causing it
to smell like dill pickles.

It is insidious and subtle. It is dangerous and terrifying to
behold. It is also a rather interesting shade of mauve.

These are just a few signs of infection.

This is a complete hoax. There is no virus with the heading "A Virtual Card for You" or "A Card For You". Nearly all the anti-virus sites who alert people to hoaxes have this one listed as a hoax. The tip off here is the reference to Microsoft. The Microsoft Corporation does not make announcements, classify, or in anyway keep track of viruses. They do internally respond to security holes in their browser and e-mail program (Outlook) to help make infection through these programs more difficult, but they are not in the antivirus business.

There was no panic in New York or anywhere else. And again, no virus can "permanently destroys a hard drive" or any other hardware device. Viruses are just computer programs and the affect data only, not hardware. Even if a virus could destroy the FAT (file allocation table) stored in the zero sector of your hard drive, a second copy is stored on your hard drive and your computer would access that one if the first was not found.

Just dump this one and tell the person who sent it to you let everyone know this is a total fabrication.

yup, i also swim in the pond of IT, lurking in the dark depths of New Media

on a different note, the worse virus i ever had was an ex girlfriend (who really did destroy my HDD, as well as the machine it was inside by putting it in the garden, soaking it in petrol, and burning the fawker, claiming i spent more time with 'it' then 'her'.)

but on a brighter note it gave me the perfect opertunity to upgrade both the pc and the girlfriend to newer versions...

nah, this was many many moons ago, when a p200mmx was state of the art and i spent bloody months trying to figure out what i was gonna fill a whopping 2.1gig hdd with (the answer is always porn, apparently, go figure )

now my current object of desire (arriving sometime bloody soon or i may have a tantrum right here and pee myself) is a dell inspiron 5100, it's sex in a box, it really is, for those that care (and understand ):
