Right. I've just signed up to this "Blogger" website in the hope that I'll be able to subscribe to those blogs (like you can on LiveJournal), but I can't find that option. Does it exist?

nope. I normally use something like google reader or bloglines

just get a news feed reader plugin for firefox

although to be honest i use safari most of the time so just use the built-in feed reader
