its from teachers:

"some girls wander by mistake
into the mess that scalpels make"

maybe he's saying that he's accidentally killed a woman with a scalpel?

or that a woman has wandered into his life, which is a mess through drug addiction?

Erm...that's what I've kind of always assumed he was talking about... After having just gone and read the lyrics to the Cohen song (finally!), though, I dunno... Hmm. :? :von:

Mind you, old Laughing Lenny was never one to write a direct lyric much himself...guess you take you're own meaning and nothing wrong with that !

Scapels could be a reference to needle marks. But I guess you thought of it already...

Taken literally, "SOME GIRLS" is a crossword definition for "SISTERS" while "WANDER" written "BY MISTAKE" is... :von:
:notworthy: observant bloke, :notworthy: ain't he?

WANDER is an anagram of ANDREW and so could be said to be "written by mistake"

You need a crossword-head for this kind of nonsense. ;)

"some girls wander by mistake

I'd always seen some kind of messy hospital/operation procedure in these lines.

Abortions, perhaps?

The mess that scalpels make is none other than laughing Lenny himself. In previous verses he speaks about using his fork like a scalpel in an asylum and asking God if he’s carved enough. Eldritch is right, he’s a regular Bill Hicks. :innocent:

Came here because I've been listening to this song all day. I write and I borrowed SGWBM as a title and I was curious what was said here.

Seems to me that we're talking about growth and evolution, or a type of decay, or the intersection of the two.

The lessons lead him to an asylum. Pain? Heartache? He's nourished by the nurses and given a scalpel as a utensil. His task is to carve, it seems. He tries to sing, to love, and is not triumphant. (That's life...)

Finally, the pain and the whittling of the self is done. Is he done? No, he is just bone. So he eats and eats and pays in hate. A conversion of energy and focus. But it isn't enough? Is he done? They laugh.

There is no destination. Carve and fatten and try. Some wander into this journey.

That's about the best I can articulate how it strikes me. I was hoping for more here. :)

You can read plastic surgery. Part of carving yourself away is to be dead ass wrong yet certain.
