The Hell that is HMV

I was very generously gifted forty of our British Pounds via an His Master's Vibes credit card. I can't spend them... there's nothing I want that they stock.
I dented it with a purchase of Hawkwind's Space Ritual (£21, worth it for... well... the sleeve reproduction) and The Clash's Combat Rock (I needed it, don't ask -£8
).
So that'is £11 left.
I need a lot of music but can I find it in HMV? Can I FECK!
What is that shop for?
answers of "it's a chart shop" will be treated with the contempt they deserve!

You might get lucky and find a DVD of a decent fillum in the bargain bin...

I had the same situation myself last year and it was nowhere near £40 that I had to dispose of. More frustrating is that their website is one of the cheaper ones around, and often with the quickest delivery times. But the credit cards can't be used on that.
I don't know what the shop is for anymore - the Croydon one seems split in two halves. The bargain side (2 albums for a tenner, many of them pretty recent) and the side that they will surely never manage to sell (£16 for something back catalogue available on line for a fiver).

Seems not many people here either shop at HMV or have problems with the store. Just doing my bit to get to the ten required posts; carry on...

Save the last £11 for presents for nieces, nephews, and children of friends - there's bound to be something in HMV for them

I've seen M&S gift vouchers sell on ebay for more than their face value. Go Figure.

I got Being There (classic Peter Sellars film for those not in the know) in the Leeds one yesterday for a fiver. Well worth it. Still leaves you £6 though I suppose...

My local HMV rocks cos I can normally get new stuff there the week before it's released anywhere else.
Overall the selection is rubbish though, although it was the place where I first got my mitts on the old Sisters singles back in the day. Funny how it is - since they got rid of vinyl, the overall quality and choice has gone totally downhill.
The book or DVD suggestion sounds good.

Even with vouchers I feel bad spending £17.99 or so on a CD. I had £50 of book vouchers recently and I just couldn't bring myself to spend £9.99 on a book I could read in a week. My brain kept saying "..it'll be cheaper on ebay/2nd hand bookshop...it'll be cheaper on ebay/2nd hand bookshop" even though I would be unable to use Waterstones vouchers on ebay!

Can you not save it for any upcoming family celebrations where you need to buy a "crap" present for that musically challenged relation

I think it might be my fault, 'cos after years of faithful service I abandoned it and started downloading everything...

There were a few nice little record shops when I was there in August.
&
Zeno knew where ALL of them were.

Yeah... one of them will very probably have been Lost In Music.
A real music obsessive's shop, where you could just go and spend hours looking at the Kraut-Rock section (which I'm sure Z did
).

We've been there, but I didn't really like the guy who ran it
(you even bought something at Lost,
Steve)
The shop near the expensive lukewarm water place, however, did look very groovy!
