And for anynoe who thinks Burns is all red roses and wee sleekit beasties, here's ane we didnae cover in school!

Why choose Burns as "Scotland's Bard"? He was utterly awful! What's wrong with Byron, he fills all the same criteria and actually wrote some beautiful poetry, and people outside of Scotland actually like him!=P

Aye! I'm off this very evening to celebrate in the proper fashion. Although our tame piper won't be in attendance , the lady in charge of the whisky has exquisite taste - should make up for it to some extent

My mum got an M&S haggis for dinner tonight

I only tasted haggis for the first time less than two years ago, how did I manage to miss out on such an exsquisite pleasure for the first 23 years of my life

When there was a bunch of Scots in the management team where I work, we hired a private room at the Belgian Beer Cafe in the town for Burns night each year.
The Scots would "smuggle" copious quantities of haggis into the country & we taught the restaurant staff how to cook them & bashed neeps & tatties.
They also did the best cocka leekie soup I have ever tasted.
Wasn't too keen on the cranachan though, but then it has got quite a bit of cream in it, so I wouldn't be.

Unfortunately, I can't remember, having turned vegetarian back in '91.
The vege haggis tends to taste like a spicy meally pudden.

I'm trying to cut down on eating meat, so no haggis for me (two of my flatmates will be, though), so I'm having a veg stew, some whiskey (only got American s**t, 'm afraid) and Burns-ing some herbs later along to a soundtrack of Hawkwind.
