that 'flashback' song

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

you know, the one you hear that transports you back to the time, day and place you first heard it

here's mine:
Watcher of the Skies
but only the Genesis Live version, the ambient crowd noise at the start is as important as that opening Mellotron salvo. A grey September 1973 (citation required), borrowed it from a school friend, sat in my room studying the sleeve as the disc spun on my proto stereo record player (a Murphy). My life was never the same after that, I can't really tell you what happened as I don't know how to write it down, suffice to say I saw and heard things differently afterwards. The effect has diminished over the decades but there's still a glimmer everytime I play it.

China In Your Hand by T'Pau.

Long hot summer, a girl (obviously), lots of fun with friends partying and not a care in the world.

Think I was 16 (?) - that long long break after my O'Levels.....

Thanks James, now I am miles away.................. :D

Deep purple - Child in Time

Way back in the early eighties, when I was a wee kid, my mother had this record she played often. It was a compilation from Veronica radio... you know, the pirateradio station that transmitted wild music from somewhere in the northsea in the seventies. On the cover of the double elpee there was a picture of the boat itself on the wide blue sea...

Halfway through Child in Time there's a lot of screaming and when that came on, my mum told us (my brother & me who were mesmerized by the noise) the story of this sinking ship... From that moment on, every time I hear that song, I find myself back in my old home in the sofa thinking about that sinking ship. We actually renamed that song to 'den boot zinkt' (=the boat sinks  ) ...

Years later I was living in an Antwerp apartement, pretty close to the harbour. I loved to go for a walk there and one day I saw this ship... the one from that albumcover, still wearing the Veronica name. It took me some time to figure out the ship wasn't on the bottom of the sea.

Both 'Prayers For Rain' by The Cure and 'A Good Idea' by Sugar remind me of walking home from my girlfriends through the market town when I was a teenager. It was a long walk and I always had my walkman with me. Even now those songs bring up strong happy memories

'Paradise City' by G'n'R.

The path towards good and interesting music started there, right at that fence where Axl Rose was waving me in, bottle-o-jack in one hand, a Marl' in the other. Found some other bobtails along the way there, such as mister Bongiovi, mister Sixx and mister Roth.

Then strayed a bit, took the left hand fork, saw the Tardy brothers and Mick and Mitch Harris along with sir Schuldiner and preacher Trey Azagthoth, went up to the middle again where I met mister Mustaine and Empty Head-field and a Large Oilrig.

From then on it has been a very interesting journey backe and forthe between metal, rock, indie, wave, death, doom, goff, experimental, noise, ambient, drone, classical, ethereal, clinical, magical...

But Axl pointed his finger to the road in the first place. Thank you.

Dear Izzy,
Why did you have to put that twit Axl's name rather than Slash when I'm quite sure it would have been his great guitar licks that attracted you to the music.
Disappointed,

Nate

Slash... cannot... point... because... he uses both his hands to play those amazing licks.

Duh.

Thinking of "flashback" songs, there are so many I couldn't decide for one ...

Plenty of David Bowie ...
Memory of a Free Festival or Move On or all this Young Americans stuff like Right and Golden Years ... ah.

Or more "currently" ... The Motel or The Voyeur of Utter Destruction or New Killer Star or Try Some, Buy Some ...

And, of course, each and every Sisters' song and cover.
And here, for the latter, Confide in Me, above all -
reminding me of the Glauchau Woodstage and the Rendsburg
Supercrash Festival ...

one of my friends gave me a tape copy of the LP on a night out. problem was the night out consisted drinking 'speical brew' down in one - never been so sick evah - got kicked out of the pub / club /house, so went and sat on the clifftops listening to this on my walkman (inbetween vomiting). managed the pub the next night though.... we were so young then

but yeah.. that song is my 'changing tracks Jo'

Only a few bars of the Cure's "the Hanging Garden" and I am a teenager again and in my friends bedroom, a bottle of nasty bourbon on the table, candles lit and the overwhelming smell of Schwartzkopf hairspray in the air...
A dangerous combination in anyone's book!!

just to let ye ken, the WatS effect has not diminished, christophe was looking for the Montreal gig (which I have on a disc somewhere) instead I stumbled upon the unmixed Genesis ~ Live! album, it still works :D

Yeah. Always makes me chuckle too.

I think my flashback song has to be Understanding Jane by The Icicle Works.

Mad nights out, waking up with mystery injuries, driving Karen to work in my dressing gown, cycling across a cricket green in the dark & being upended by the rope cordon, getting beaten up by the local "casuals" every week after the Shimmer night in Worthing.
Aaaah. Happy days.
;D
Cheers.
