I might even have worn one.
To be fair the "People's Republic of Yorkshire" thing pre-dates
's use of it; back when Sheffield council was controlled by David Blunkett (David, David, shame on you; shame on you for turning blue) it was commonly called the "people's republic of South Yorkshire":
