as posted elsewhere:
I shall be moving Heartland over to the new servers this coming monday - 21st September
This should mean the site will be down for a day or so, from Monday evening (GMT)
When it comes back up you shouldn't notice any changes - we will still be running the same version of the forum software - I'll upgrade that a week or two later as it's a big job in itself
However, there may well be teething troubles so I'll create a thread in the Feedback area specifically for bug reports
Thanks in advance for all your patience
Important - downtime on Monday 21st September

"A day or so"...does this mean the whole of Tuesday too?
There is a very important birthday boy on that day and I want to start his thread you see.
Yay! We are going to the other side!

it depends on your ISP
the site should be back up and running on the new server by the time i go to bed on monday evening, but the address "myheartland.co.uk" might not be pointing at the right server for you until later tuesday... that part of it is out of my hands, so its hard to say how long it will take.
for some users it could be more or less instant, in other cases it can be up to 24 hours before people's ISPs update their dns details

ISP = Internet Service Provider (who you pay for internet access)
DNS = Domain Name Server (computer(s) on the internet which translate the www.myheartland.co.uk address to the location of the actual computer HL is on)

cheers guys
i've done the exact same move to several sites over the last week or so and its gone pretty smooth
granted, none of the others have as large a db or filesystem, as heartland (the gallery takes up all the space ) but essentially its the same steps as moving, say the march violets site
the new webserver is all primed - domains area created, databases ready, backups already running (even though there's nothing there to backup yet), email addresses created
i just need to
1) take the site off line on monday evening
2) run a full db and filesystem backup
3) copy the backups to the new server
4) unzip the filesystem
5) restore the db
6) bring the forum back online
7) update the DNS
8) wait...
...at least thats the theory
i tried steps 2 to 5 last night using a recent backup and it went smoothly

btw. how large if the size of the HL mysql db..circa? I cant really imagine how much content has been filed over the years.
Probably it would be half of the size without Mr.Blast spamming around here all the time

Thanks for the info - I wouldn't have expected that much considering it's just plain text but on the other hand >300k postings is quite a lot as well, definetely more than a keyboards lifetime (just discovered the statistics^^)
