Obscure live songs

Ever been to a gig and been gobsmacked to hear a song you never expected to hear live?

Have just discovered that U2 are playing a song called Your Blue Room, which is way up there on the obscure scale. Is from their Passengers album.

Like them or loath them it's a really ambient song.

From personal experience it'll have to be Giving Ground at Crystal Palace in '93. Didn't expect it in a million years at the time.

"Drowning" (long forgotten b-side) has always been one of my fav All About Eve songs... one the way to their Royal Albert Hall gig (91?), I was jokingly saying "they'll play it, they'll play it!" and my friend was "noooo frigginn way!!!"

And then they AAE turn up on stage, and kick off the set with it!

JaMC kicking of their set with "everything is alright when youre down" in Athens back in 91. My favourite gig ever.

I was quite taken aback when the Sisters opened (& subsequently murdered) with Comfortably Numb in Birmingham 92.

Took a while to recover from Confide In Me at Brixton in 97 too.

Zodiac Mindwarp played I'm Your Man when I saw them in 86

But I think the best one was The Cure doing I Dig You in Brighton in 85.
The even got Frank Bell up there to "sing" it.
Or was it when they finished the last tour with Forever in NY last year?
No-one was expecting that to happen.

Bowie was always good for pulling an obscure song out for a treat but my fav surprise was Bewlay Brothers at Hammersmith in 2002.

More recently Muse played the Albert Hall last year and encored with Megalomania, playing it on that dirty great big organ which was a bit special :)

Comfy Numb/Skos as first one at the Pukkelpop festival was a very big surprise, but the Sister Ray/Ghost Rider at the end of the show certainly got the first price!
Giving Ground the year after at the Beach festival was another good surprise...

... thank goth we didn't have internet back then :innocent:

Although Good Things at Suikerrock was no lesser surprise! :notworthy:

Another case that comes to mind is Sonic Youth at the Lokerse Feesten last year (brilliant gig!) when they opened with The Burning Spear from their first ep. I never expected that in a million years either!

Oh... funk/soul wonder Me'shell N'degeocello playing Joy Division's Interzone last year was quite a bomb too 8)

They're always a good night out, fingers crossed they'll play a decent length set and not just Doolittle and the B Sides..
