Sigue Sigue Sputnik

Another band I've discovered through the Sisters of Mercy, it's not just that SSS mastermind Tony James played with the Sisters but apparently Andrew Eldritch was on the verge of auditioning for Sputnik - I say "apparently" because I got that from Wikipedia who aren't the most reliable of sources - and very clearly Sigue Sigue Sputnik's one of those bands that are at least as much a "concept" as a music.

Though the music's fairly competent new wave with some creative use of sound effects on the songs I've heard, it's really not the same without the company of the videos and stage shows (looks like they're still touring after reuniting!) which are pretty much the crystallized form of everything awesomely ridiculous about 1980s sci-fi completely with the bizarre "fashion of the future" image.

The weird thing is that though their image is quite different from the Sisters of Mercy's at the same time, if just as stylized, there's something similar futuristic about both. (some songs on Floodland make me think of Blade Runner in particular) Maybe that's a common effect of the post-punk style? (see also Devo for a completely different take on that...)

It's actually pretty funny that Tony James joined the Sisters when they sounded least post-punk...

Ahem, I kind of liked Love Missile. I think their mistake was telling people they were the future of rock and roll. At least they annoyed the NME for a while.... ;D

Which makes them somewhat more acceptable. :D

Wouldn't have called them total pants, like you I enjoyed some of their stuff, but they were nowhere near as radical and dangerous as they seemed to think they were.

first album is pretty fun and the novelty value lingers but when the second album sounded exactly the same sans the 'hooks' - the joke was over

I admired their sacs more than the tunes

Who was that bird again with the sunglasses that hung around with them that looked a bit like Janet Street Porter with a Louise Brooks haircut? It's on the tip of my brain!
