Well, if the guy wants to redefine "goth" so widely that all his favourite bands fit in, more power to him

He won't be the first, he won't be the last.

Strangely enough he's not the first person I've heard insisting that The Smiths were a goth band. Maybe there's something to it after all.

Morrissey is though ;D

on topic:
these days the term Goth is used in the same way as they used to say New Wave.
it includes things as New Wave, electro, EBM, Ambient, symphonic metal, punk, ...
everything that smells a bit darker as usual..

hahaha! no i'm talking about back in the end 80's when Alternative was the name given to all goth, punk, new wave, industrial, were labelled under. it was the scene in s.a. when being alternative meant you were from the darker side and in the country where christians reigned we were the evil devil walkers from the dark side. in JHB where the alternative clubs used to be, you were either an alternative or a trendy. there was no grey area.
the alternative clubs where the best to visit and where the underground then. as we got older ( nearer the end teens) the alternative peeps met up with the trendy house type people in underground parties. there more of the industrial goth was played, what's that called today?

all i know was in the alternative scene we had groups of goth, punk, skinheads, and older people. most of the deejays where either uk based in s.a. and all our music stream came from all over.

as a sad goth getting onto the dance floor and dancing by yourself in your own world, the world of LSD and drugs for the imagination, waving arms in the air with the twirling of the hands and fingers, standing on the same spot whilst dancing and only moving the hips and upper body where the good old days for me! and the rest of the goths and punks were all older by a few years. when the new age generation of want to bes started, it was a laugh and the alternative scene went even more underground. in s.a. anyway.

*phew* now i need a wine.
