Starting from scratch Steve, like the idea of a streaming thing, put all my CD's on to the memory and play in different rooms.
I can't download from interwb on account of our pish dial up connection and can't do much research
I've still got a record deck so'll not need another.
I've got a sony MP3 & not an i-pod but don't mind getting an i-pod & a docking station if it's the best option.

The Sonos set up we have at work is for the house, but we use it in the restaurant I work at-it is on for 12-14 hours a day and we have different music for 3 seperate rooms--works a dream
[apart from the fact the actual music is crap although I did manage to put Nouvelle Vague's version of Marian on it----great to eat lunch to!!!!!!!]

Sonos for 2 rooms looks like it'll be nearly £800, a bit to steep I'm afraid
, that sort of thing looks find though.

Richer Sounds will sort you out.
Amp with two sets of speaker outputs: £150
2 sets of speakers: You can probably get decent-ish ones for £60-£75 per pair, call it £150
Hook your mp3 player up to the amp with a headphones-to-2RCA cable: £10
Total: £310.
Edit: Oh I forgot: Chuck in maybe ten to 20 quid for speaker wire.
And you have plenty of inputs left on the amp for any other sound equipment you may already have. You can hook a peecee up to an input and play all your mp3s from that.
World is your oyster.

Squeezebox is good alternative to Sonos, much cheaper.

See the Solid State Logic website for prices.
Shouldn't cost much above a tenner.

I could spend several hours annoying the crap out of you asking "and what does that one do?" over and over and over again.
