Was watching the slightly funny Qi on iplayer this afternoon, subject "Gothic" and the girls were mentioned by the not so funny Jimmy Carr, describing what he thought goth was...... Oh dear, that'll be added to the "press" part of the official site, eventually?!

QI can be a bit too smarmy, sometimes.

Jimmy Carr is smarm itself.

What was surprising was that Fry didn't pick him up and tell him they weren't in fact Goth and never have been - I am amazed Carr didn't lose points for that

Ideally suited, then
I like that Rich Hall(?) when he's on.

To be honest Carr described what the difference was between Goth and Emo.
Goth like TSOM and FOTN whereas EMO like My Chemical Romance and.... (someone else-did n't catch it).
And that Emos want to kill themselves whereas Goths want to kill everyone else.
Nail on the head I thought.

We watched it too - I was ok with this description!!! I was amazed how well it was handled, we were expecting them all to be 'in costume'... glad it was just a bit dark with candles

I was disappointed that they weren't!
Anyway, the show started by pointing out the real meaning of "Gothic" (ie European people who sacked Rome) and then went on to discuss various things that have been described as gothic. So spot on.

I suppose people who just like to listen to the music are right out of the picture so far as Carr is concerned, then?

He did n't say that only Goths like The Sisters or that The Sisters were Goth. He only said that Goths listen to The Sisters of Mercy

Jimmy Carr was just trying to explain to (Dad) Jack Dee the difference between Goth and Emo as he perceived it.
Goth = TSOM, FOTN
Emo = MBV, DCFC
But as Fry says at the end:
"Well, the point is, there where many things we call Gothic and just about the only thing they have in common is that they're completely unconnected to the Goths."
Which probably explains Mr Eldritch (being well-read) having an aversion to the label being applied to The Sisters from the outset.
