This SOUNDS article was partly visible on page 63 of 'Heartland - Anthology of Issues I,II and III' (1st edition October 1990), so I bought a copy of the magazine on eBay recently, here's the complete article:

"THE SISTERS OF MERCY were down to singer Andrew Eldritch and his faithful drum machine Avalanche this week after guitarist That Guitarist and bassist Craig Adams left the band.

Although this has scuppered recording plans for a new album this month, Andrew now intends to record the same album in the New Year and could well be using Wayne as a session guitarist.

The split was described as 'friendly' by a Merciful Release spokesperson. 'The cliché of musical differences would not be inappropriate. Wayne and Craig were unable to comprehend the direction the band was going.'

Andrew has also approached former Gun Club bassist Patricia Morrison - now in Fur Bible - to play on the album, but it's not yet known whether Andrew will continue with the name Sisters of Mercy.

Wayne and Craig are now reported to be getting their own band together.

Meanwhile, another ex-Sisters guitarist, Garry Marks," [sic!] "who left the band after their British tour last spring, is now working with Anne-Marie from Skeletal Family in a band called Ghost Dance. But the line-up of the group hasn't yet been finalised."

(SOUNDS magazine Saturday 2 November 1985, page 3)

I haven't seen this article on any Sisters related website yet, so the fact that the band split up in the last week of October 1985 raises some questions about the 1st M*****n single, which was also recorded in October 1985:

Did Hussey and Adams book studio time to record on their own while they were still in the band? Makes not much sense to me.

Or was it Sisters studio outtakes which they took with them and completed?

Aye probably. Given that there are demos of a couple of early Mish singles with Eldritch vocals.

There was probably a bit of a lag between the break-up and the issuance of an official statement. I think the actual break occurred in late September.

Can't be. In September Eldritch and Hussey were still in Hamburg writing together ... erm, sorry: not writing together.

According to the above SPEX article (October 1985, page 7) Eldritch was in the audience when Jazz Butcher recorded their 'Live in Hamburg' album (Hamburg, Onkel Pö, 16/8/1985), was a "star guest" at a Guadalcanal Diary gig (Hamburg, Onkel Pö, 8/9/1985), and finally appeared on stage together with Hussey at a Skeletal Family gig (Hamburg, Markthalle 15/9/1985).

Hussey later commented: "I was with Andrew in Hamburg for weeks to write the second Sisters album, and it was the worst time of my life. We were living somewhere at the edge of the city, we rarely went to the heart of the city, I couldn't speak the language, so I couldn't even watch TV. Andrew rejected all my songs and made me work on one single chord all the time: 'Here's my song - E-flat!'" (SPEX magazine, Germany, March 1987, page 16)

In the above interview Hussey said "that was in October 1985".
