the good news so far is that all these people yelling "they used to perform better live 20 yrs ago" are not right. Apart from the crummy VHS, this could've been last month.

with a real bass, a band does at least look better live and four actors

anyway, IMHO, it's mostly a visual effect ... and given the increased amount of fog
and the lights nowadays, an additional bass player could be rather an irritating factor ... ...

If a band is able to appreciate the instrument with some presence in the mix and neat basslines, a bass doesn't have to sound like some unwanted but necessary evil humming in the background. I think The Cure is a good (positive) example:
