I never really saw that as a "self-help" book to tell the truth.

If I'm not comprised into those 3 already, make that 4... ;D

Although it was a combination of own willpower and Allen's book, but 'tis ever thus, no...?

It is if you went to a Welsh Non-Conformist chapel twice every sunday from 4 to 16 years of age.

But I had already stopped smoking, and then after a week or so I read the book to confirm myself.

So what makes Allen's book so effective?
i.e. more successful than other give up smoking books.
I am curious!

i can't stand the stuff. patronising bollox

having said that, my encounters with self help books have so far been limited to flicking through a couple of pages at the bookstore, so what do i know?

Self Help Books I Have Known:

Mastering Golf The Chinese Way - Ho Lin Wun
Gymnastics Made Easy - Horace Ontalbars
Advanced Arboreal Techniques - Theresa Greene
Building A Great Fashion Brand - Lee Vyfyvohwon
Beating Your Addiction To Self-Abuse - Jacques Kinghof

Self Help Books I Have Read And Benefitted From:

Winnie the Pooh on Management - Roger Allen
Winne the Pooh on Problem Solving - Roger & Stephen Allen
The Prince - Niccolo Machiavelli
The Art of War - Sun Tzu (clichéd, but worth reading)
Straight & Crooked Thinking - Thouless
I Had Trouble In Getting To Solla Sallew - Dr. Seuss

The last is a classic - the story of a troubled young man from the Valley of Vung who hears about a place where they never have troubles (or at least, very few). He goes through all manner of trials and tribulations to get there, only to find that the door is locked. The doorman suggests another place where they never have troubles (no troubles at all), and the young man thinks about going there. Then he reconsiders, and the book closes with,

"I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind.
Some come from ahead and some come from behind.
But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready you see.
Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!"

Hmmh, I don't think it's the book that makes people quit. Maybe most people who pick it up are tired of smoking anyway. I remember it being quite blunt, so maybe people who still like smoking would flip through some pages and put it away.

Self help books and CDs are my guilty pleasure. I like Michael Heppell's stuff, just the right mix of the obvious but surprisingly useful.

if you ever have a Paul McKenna weightloss CD, dont leave it in your CD player overnight, as sods law says the blinking thing will break, and the man in the fixy shop will laugh at you. A lot :(

Self help books that did NOT help are another story ;D
I read a Karen Kingston book on Feng Shui and straightening the mess that is your apartment. It all sounded pretty reasonable (I mean, reasonable as something that esoteric can be...) until she started talking about how to s**t in harmony with the universe

And a very nasty book that probably the Germans know, "Simplify Your Life", the ugly yellow book with the repulsive "cute" drawings of happy imbeciles. I only managed 40 pages or so, and it's been a few years ago, but I still feel sick.
