Stupid question time sorry.

Us Anglophones are not particularly good with other languages.

For instance the only Brit I ever heard pronouncing IKEA with anything even approaching (what I assume is) proper Swedish pronunciation was Brian Sewel. (He called it ee-KAY-uh rather than the usual British pronunciation of eye-KEY-uh.) And I can count on the fingers of one foot the number of people who pronounce Braun (the German surname, e.g. Werner von Braun) anything like it should be pronounced (like English "Brown" FYI)

So how would you say "Von"?

As long as you say it only once...

depending on who i'm speaking to at the time, i would typically refer to him as:

uncle andrew (when chatting with members of the sisters camp... ironically of course. he's not my uncle!)
the prince of darkness (when chatting with former/bitter members of the sisters camp)
eldritch (when speaking to the uninitiated)
von (with a v) (when speaking to the initiated)

on the very few occasions i have addressed him directly, i have usually mumbled and gibbered so incoherently that it hasn't really mattered what i've called him

although, in theory, i think i'd (at least try to) call him "mr. eldritch". after all, i don't know him personally

People who don't know it's Eldritch

and if I ever met him it'd probably be Mr Eldritch as well but that's probably all I'd be able to say.

Hell, in my letters way back in the 90ies, I've called him a complaining Smallhanns (for once, yes ...),
Mr. Eldritch (bad enough), and Uncle Andrew (for once, again), but mostly it's been (Dear) Andrew ...

and that's how it is.
I couldn't imagine to call him VON (exept for here in writing) or,

We are talking about a nickname for the guy with a stage name? For what it is worth, unless my memory is off, Chris says Von with the English V sound. Personally I probably would not call him Von anyway; it seems like an inner sanctum name, and he and I have not shared lunch in recent memory.

If you get close enough to anyone and just look them directly in the eye, you don't need to call them anything (I've used this many a time and as a result have no idea who I've been chatting with. ) OR, if you just stroll/meander/mince up, proffer a hand and introduce yourself the most appropriate address will be given by the addressee (you'd like to think.)

I've often called him George, he's often ignored me, but it might not have been him, but if it was he's doesn't answer to George.

I do know that he didn't much care for being addressed as "You Fat B@stard!" at Reading a few years ago...

A funny story slightly off topic but not by too much that I heard was this one.........

This hotelier where I lived in Ireland was known for exagerating.
He told us he was in a lift in a London hotel once & this woman said to him
"You're Paddy Enright aren't you?"

"Yes", he said "But I can't put a name to your face - Do I know you?"

"I'm Elizabeth taylor" she replied

That was so funny & was hard to keep a straight face when he told it.

Where does "Von" come from anyway? (No, not London, Leeds, the Far East or the Darkest Nether regions of Hell. I mean what are the origins of the nickname?) I've only ever seen it on here and always assumed it was a HL joke but now Petseri says that Chris uses it and it's "an inner sanctum thing". What's the skinny?
