Death (or the horrible end of my MP3 player)

A sad day. My Ipod classic (bought back in 1934) has given up the ghost.
I've tried and tried but can't bring it back to life.

I need a replacement pronto - The thought of actually listening to the babble that goes on around me at work horrifies me.

Having looked on the web - I'm horrified how much Apple MP3 players are.

So, the question is - does anybody have any cheaper recommendations?
I guess I'd be looking at a 16GB model.
I'm assuming they're all compatible with Itunes? :?
Try and keep it sensible kids. :P
Thanks.

I bought a Cowon S9 (32GB model) on - I think - PiB's recommendation, and I'm quite well pleased with it. About the only thing I'd mark it down on is that it doesn't play M4A files, but otherwise sound quality, features, format support and all the rest are top notch.

I've got a replacement battery on order for my iPod (iPod Photo 60GB if anyone cares) -- it's had a new clickwheel and a new screen; it's starting to get a bit like Trigger's broom* if anyone remembers that. But not bad for an iPod I've had since 2005.

* In "Only Fools And Horses" Trigger wins an award for owning the same broom for 20 years. It has had 17 new heads and 14 new handles, but is still the same broom.

Oddly enough, I'm in exactly the same situation, and like you, I was horrified at the cost of the current iPods, though despite that, I'm being tempted by the 32 GB iPod Touch... I'm not sure 16 GB is enough for my needs, as I had around 20 GB of music on my old Classic, and still have a fair few CDs that have not been transferred.

But a look at what else is available actually shows that the iPod Nano isn't actually that overpriced compared the rest of the market.

What I do find remarkable is that I can get a new phone (on pay as you go) with an MP3 player, for less than the price of most MP3 players, and as most phones store media on removable SD cards I needn't be limited by what will fit on one card; I've almost decided that may be the best option. Though all those apps on the iPod touch also look alluring (but would possibly endanger my position as an employee..)

Oh, and almost non-Apple devices are NOT compatible with iTunes.

Which is as good a reason as any to shun Apple and its devices like the rabid dog that it is. If your business model involves chaining people to a service or device then it's a crappy model and you deserve your business to go to the wall in short order.
There are a host of "open source" MP3 players out there which will play MP3, FLAC, Ogg Vobis, WMA, whatever, very happily - iRiver is one example. Check out the E200 140 squids, does music, video, games, records stuff, makes the tea and walks the dog*. 16 gigglybits of flashmem, takes the itty-bitty essdee cards. Seemples!

*Not all of these claims may actually be true

i got 16GB iPod Nano, if you want just listen music instead watch video on very small screen it's reasonable choice, of course imo.

There seems to be little difference in price for the capacity you get.
The 160GB IPod iClassic s 170 quid - the 8GB nano is about 150.
The 160BG Classic is looking like the favourite at the moment.

I guess that's because the Nano uses flash memory but the Classic has a hard disk - which have larger capacity but are more prone to failure due to moving parts.

I ended up going with a Nokia X2-00 for £60, and I can even use it for phone calls as well.

It's not directly compatible with iTunes, but it's easy enough to manually copy music files across from the iTunes folder.

Even before I read the end of your post, Triggers famous award sprang to mind.

Your awards in the post mark - Might take a while to get to you though what with all the snow causing problems for the posties.

The touch is pretty, but if you want a dedicated music player, the classic is great for the job & also for the capacity.
If you're content with low bit rate mp3s then the touch is fine, as the files will be small. But you can ram the classic full of lossless audio & it'll take a while to fill it up. Just make sure it's apple lossless as wavs are almost double the size.
You can even Rock Box it so that it plays flacs without having to convert them to wavs & then to M4A.
As for M4A files, Itunes will convert them into other playable formats.

Oh & bung those sh!tty bundled headphones in the bin & get something decent.
