Leeds first-time visitor

Hello Heartlanders - first time in Leeds next week, and I was wondering what to do during daytime.
I like stuff like historical buildings, areas with cheap restaurants and little shops, Chinatowns... any particular recommended area?
Oh, and where would I go to find African/Caribbean groceries and beauty products? I googled "black beauty supply" but it pointed me to an, erm, night club I believe...
If you have any ideas -

Chapeltown, I used to live quite close to that area. It's a short bus ride from town-3,3A will take you there.
Chinatowns
Not that I know of.
cheap restaurants and little shops
There are various shops'n'stuff in town. markets too, not sure about surrounding areas.

Loads, but don't ask me I'm uncultured.

Don't listen to any of the locals! They'll tell you that the only historical sites of interest are Elland Road and the statue of Billy Bremner.

Oh, is that the statue you see photographed from all angles when you go on the Leeds website?

Try the local p*ss called Tetley's. It's good for your bowel movement.

Meh. If you want proper local beer (Tetley is owned by Carlsberg *spit*) try something from the Leeds Brewery, or indeed any one of a large number of local small breweries.

...that you're lying.
or at least unfair.
to re-address the balance, in addition to elland rd you need to include in your tour a pig farm and rubbish tip.

I googled it. It's NOT the statue of the horse guy on the Leeds homepage, and Elland Road is not even a road, it's just a stadium!!!
Tsk.
I think I'll stick to beauty shopping and cafes...

Or,five minutes walk from the venue, and splendidly just across the road from my hotel is Mr Foleys Cask Ale house, lots of fantastic beer from all over the world.

As to shops, well my girlfriend always insists on walking around the market when we are in dirty Leeds, huge indoor and outdoor affair with loads of stalls.

Or make your own chocolate beer?
I think I might need to start one of these threads for Manchester too

Plenty to do in Leeds central over a few days!
- For a bit of Cultcha, Leeds City Art Gallery, a great way to spend an hour or so and the beautiful tiled cafe for a coffee as well
- For architecture and local colour, Leeds City Market is always worth a visit (and I'm pretty sure there are a couple of black beauty products stalls on there as well)
- A wander down to Holbeck for some wonderful mill buildings (Temple Mill etc) followed by a pint or two in The Midnight Bell (Leeds Brewery) on the way back
- and lots of other great historic ale pubs in the lanes off Briggate...
oh, and Kirkstall Abbey is well worth the short bus ride
