Just because the eighties wasn't dominated by a handful of massively successful bands unlike the decades before and since, doesn't make the music less good. The punk explosion blew away the old rules on convention giving rise to so many different genres and encouraging us to appreciate everything from Sinatra to the Sisters.

Speaking personally, I think the 80's was a decade of two halves, Brian.
The first half seemed to be full of bands to see, listen to and / or dance badly to. The second half seems to be something of a musical desert.
Admittedly, there were a lot of leftovers from the late '70s, but I remember in no particular order :-
Human League / Kraftwerk / Numan / B52's / Japan / Heaven 17 / Devo / Kate Bush / Bauhaus / Hanoi Rocks / Johnny Thunders / Cuddly Toys / Marionette / Transvision Vamp / Sigue Sigue Sputnik
That is wihout really thinking too deep - I am not saying they were all excellent but they all had something to offer.
The second half - nothing much. That maybe due to the fact that I was taking less interest or that there was less to take interest in.

for me it was a joy: Heaven Up Here, Mask, FALAA, Gentlemen Take Polaroids, Combat Rock, A Zed and Two Noughts, Boys and Girls, Clandestine, Cuckoo, Porno, Disintegration, So far, so good... so what!, The Las Vegas Story, Bert Plant's first two ellpees, lotsa Vangelis, Making Contact, anything Big Audio Dynamite, Movement, Nowhere, Psalm 69, The Stone Roses, all the Chams output, this is the day... this is the hour... this is THIS!

I guess it comes down to whatever floats your boat

But the majority that make up the "That Half" I remember as trying to do something different, a lot of fun to see live and making interesting LPs to play on the stereo - which I still listen to today.

however, there are many great things

Smiths, Eurythmics, JAMC, Cocteau Twins, Birdland (before official release), Nirvana which say the late 80s were great

Aside from the bands who were (or became) too big to play there, even a list of bands who I saw live at Retford Porterhouse would confirm that 80s music was pretty awesome. (Play Dead, Southern Death Cult, NMA, Theatre of Hate + heaps of punk bands like Discharge, Blitz etc to name a few)

An awful lot of "chart" music was pap, but around the edges - and in particular the "indie" charts were full of awesome music. Back then The Sisters were the leader of the pack, but there were plenty of other bands that floated your boat - from the Banshees who were always in the charts, to RLYL and Rose of Avalanche (who weren't). I have even mellowed to some of the chart stuff from back then - "Will You" by Hazel O'Connor is my wife's fave that I have come to appreciate, and some mainstream stuff like "Dare" is pretty decent.

just one band is enough for me: Wire. (I know that they weren't start in 80's). and PIL and Talking Heads.

....also, seeing as this is what BOWIE thought of the eighties.

Bowie was sh1te in the 80's and ever since (I'm not a fan).
But the 80's bought us all the quality stuff James mentioned and New Order, The Chameleons, The Wonder Stuff and Bananarama.
