"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening." R.E.M.
Didn't bother with their last album and too much of the post-Monster stuff was very average but good innings overall.

They had at least few choons. No farewell tour, no big interviews in press. Just split.

Apparently Kurt Cobain got fed up with it too.

I've been trying to formulate that thought in my head ever since I heard, nail/head there.
I might steal that for my twatter (with due credit of course)

Too harsh, a superb band who even in later years had at least 3 total pearlers per album. Saw them at both Huddersfield gigs in 95, Glastonbury 99 and 3 times at Old Trafford, each and every one a top nite out.
Favourite song? What, out of their vast back catalogue? Today, Circus Envy because it rocks, usually Nightswimming.
Thanks R.E.M. for 25 years of top tunes

A friend of mine heard about it in the Indian restaurant. Passed out in his curry. Woke up and said, "well, that's me in the korma"...
...coat?

I think REM played an interesting hand in how a band can do whatever they like and still be in the mainstream. Their arrangements were often quirky, their sense of image quite off-centre (including sleeve artwork etc) and did well despite being in bed with a major league record co.
Job done good, in my book.

Was never a fan but I've nonetheless got some respect for what they achieved in their time. Just not to my taste.

Out of Time is in my all time top 10 albums, it really is outstanding. That said, I lost interest after Monster but still listen to their 85-95 output on regular basis.

Does Everybody Hurts sound like Shiny Happy People? Does Fall on Me sound like Star 69? IMO, their songs don't all sound like each other anymore than all the Sisters (or most other bands) entire collection of songs do.
That said, as big as Automatic For the People made them, that album (again IMO) was a bit too much REM by numbers for my liking.
So put that in your 'snoud' and smoke it.

I'm gonna be on the side of Murmur, Document and Green. Stunning albums.
I'll leave you with the chance to see a young R.E.M. making their debut on national TV, aka the Letterman Show.
