University Challenge - BBC2 Monday 17th Oct 2011

After 31 years, finally academic recognition.

On this evenings program Paxman played a track by Morrissey, which led to the 3 bonus questions around songs titles that were also band names.

Fist up was Sisters of Mercy by Leonard Cohen.

Happily as the team in question failed to answer the question (an Oxford College I think) that enabled Paxman to explain (and I paraphrase here) 'The Sisters of Mercy were a band formed in Leeds in 1980'.

Not a mention of the G word or anything disparaging - just the facts.

If he saw it, 8) would have smiled I'm sure!

Has to be the most mainstream reference I ever recall the band receiving.

Flagg

What other "mainstream references" can people recall? I remember one of their songs (This Corrosion maybe but not sure) being played in Eastenders as the police raided a teenage Ian Beales drugs party.

I recall Dominion (Mavvah Rasha) being played during a Tomorrow's World piece in the early 90s.

I'd love to see 'Ribbons' used in an HIV awareness campaign.

Yeah, I often wondered whether they took the idea from that song ... ...

They also got a mention on the weakest link last night ( a repeat here in Magyarorszag)

The question was

The bands, The Sisters of Mercy, The Cult & The Cure were known as goths or bad boys?

There's also a thread somewhere for all the references in Spooks.

Annoyingly, I didn't get the University Cghallenge answer cos that was the first time I'd ever heard the song.

:von: refused to let Buffy use any Sister's on the soundtrack. On a tangent. Nick Cave posters abounded in Buffy. The Nephilim appeared both in Miami Vice and even stranger Emmerdale (Farm - as it was then).

They'd actually used it already (Never Land on the episode Lie To Me) and had to replace it on overseas broadcasts and DVDs to Blood Of A Stranger by Shawn Clement and Sean Murray.

They used a Sisters poster on a wall in one scene (old head and star logo)
in a German television film, lately.

Title: Sie hat es verdient (She deserved it)
with Veronica Ferres in one of the leading roles. First broadcast on 12th September this year and as such gained wide attention in the media.
No word about The Sisters, though, which given the basic content* of that film was clearly not to expect ... *shiver ...

HUGE Sisters poster in Halloween : The Curse Of Michael Myers (H6) on a bloke's bedroom wall. Visible tons of times in the movie.

How about the old goth at the BBC who plays Sisters stuff (very recently) over snooker coverage? Remember that!?

Just watched University Challenge on the BBC i-player (only available in the UK- was out of the country last week) and the Sisters question is 15 minutes in (if you don't facncy watching a quarter of an hour of boffins in glasses answering questions about isotopes and molluscs).

It would have been a delicious irony had it been :von: 's own former Oxford college which had been on UC that week ...
